UMBC Baseball Drops First Game of Spring Classic, 5-2, to Eastern Kentucky

BRADENTON, Fla.—The UMBC baseball team began their spring training on Saturday as they fell to Eastern Kentucky, 5-2, in the first of a six-game series as part of the IMG Baseball Academy College Spring Classic.

 

The Retrievers (4-6) gave up an early, two-run, lead over the Colonels (7-7-1) and were held scoreless for the rest of the game, with junior Tom Meaney (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) and senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) registering the only RBI for UMBC. 

 

Junior Wink Nolan (Ellicott City, Md./Calvert Hall/Maryland) and senior Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) each went 2-for-4 on the day and scored one run for the Retrievers, will junior Dan Blewett (Bel Air, Md./Bel Air) was slated with the loss after going eight innings and giving up five runs, four earned, on eight hits while fanning five.

 

The Retrievers tallied one run each in the first and third innings off Meaney and Delawter’s RBI singles, but the Colonels evened the score at two runs apiece in the sixth and added three more in the eighth, while holding the Retrievers scoreless for the final six innings as they cruised to the 5-2 victory.

 

Fowler and Nolan recorded the only extra base hits for the Retrievers, both doubles, while the Retrievers were out-hit by the Colonels, 10-7, and recorded the only error of the game.

 

The Retrievers face Bradley at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday in the second game of their six-game series in Bradenton.
