WASHINGTON, D.C.—UMBC baseball senior Will Delawter (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) tallied a home run for the second straight game as he led the Retrievers (4-5) to a 10-9 win over Georgetown on Wednesday at Shirley Povich Field.

Delawter, who was also the starting pitcher for the Retrievers, was 3-for-4 on the day with a double, a home run, one run scored, and three RBI, while he pitched 3.1 innings on the mound giving up three runs (two earned) on four hits while striking out one.

Senior Sean Rae (1-1) (Westminster, Md./Calvert Hall/Frostburg) earned the first win of the 2008 season as he pitched 4.2 innings in relief and gave up six runs on 10 hits.

Junior Ryan Morse (Frederick, Md./Catoctin/Chesapeake JC) picked up his first save of the year after pitching a one-hit, scoreless inning in relief on the way to the Retrievers’ win.

Tommy Lee led the Hoyas (5-8) as he went 4-for-6 on the day with three runs scored and one batted in, while Jimmy Saris (0-3) was tabbed with the loss after giving up five runs on seven hits in three innings of work.

The Retrievers got off to a quick, 3-0, lead in the first thanks to junior Tom Meaney’s (Holbrook, N.Y./Sachem) RBI single and Delawter’s two-RBI double and added one more run each in the second and third off senior Joe Fowler’s (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) sacrifice fly and a lead-off homer by Delawter in the third to take a 5-2 lead after three innings of play.

The Retrievers posted another three-run inning in the fifth off junior Scott Peddicord’s (Columbia, Md./Long Reach) RBI double and a two-RBI double from junior Brad Brainer (Chester, Md./Kent Island/Chesapeake JC) and then scored again in the sixth off a Hoya wild pitch.

The Hoyas added two runs of their own in the bottom of the sixth to give the Retrievers a two-run lead, 9-7, but UMBC added one more run in the eighth off Meaney’s sac fly and Georgetown added two more in the bottom of the inning, to come within one run, 10-9, but Morse shut down the Hoya bats, limiting them to just one hit in the final inning.

The Retrievers embark for Bradenton, Fla. this weekend where they will participate in the IMG Baseball Academy Spring College Baseball Classic and will take on the likes of Kansas, Illinois, and St. Louis from Mar. 14-22.
