BASEBALL COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF FDU; NOTCH NINTH STRAIGHT VICTORY

Baltimore, MD --- UMBC (20-11, 12-3 NEC) completed a three-game Northeast Conference sweep of visiting Fairleigh Dickinson (3-23, 2-13 NEC) by defeating the Knights 7-4, Sunday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. It was the ninth consecutive win for the Retrievers.UMBC broke open a 4-4 tie with a three-run eighth inning to notch the victory. Sophomore Chris Becraft opened the frame with a lead-off, pinch hit double, high off the left field fence. UMBC scored the go-ahead run on a two-out wild pitch by reliever Scott Barchetto. Retrievers' junior third baseman Brad Glascock provided UMBC with two more insurance runs with a two-run double to right field.The Retrievers grabbed a 3-0 advantage by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third inning. Glascock recorded an RBI double and sophomore second baseman Dan Carpenter added an RBI single. Junior catcher Scott Kosmicky added a run producing sacrifice fly.The Knights rallied to tie the game in the fourth inning with three runs of their own. Catcher Matt Nugent recorded an RBI single and shortstop Aaron Mayhew brought home a run with a sacrifice fly. The Knights scored their other run in the frame on an error by Carpenter.UMBC went back on top at 4-3 as senior shortstop Jared Boyd ripped a single to center in the botton of the fourth inning. However, right fielder Jesse Thomas hit a long home run to right field in the top of the fifth inning to even the score once again.UMBC freshman left hander Kyle Wildasin pitched 2.2 perfect innings to earn the victory in relief of starter Eric Butkiewicz, who allowed four earned runs in 6.1 innings of work. FDU starter Eric Brooks allowed five earned runs and 12 hits to drop to 3-5 on the season.- - -UMBC - - -
