BASEBALL SWEEPS NEC RIVAL FAIRLEIGH DICKINSON

Baltimore, MD - -- The host UMBC Retrievers (19-11, 11-3 NEC) swept Northeast Conference foe Fairleigh Dickinson (3-22, 2-12 NEC) by scores of 6-2 and 5-1, Saturday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field.UMBC sophomore southpaw Joe Wilson (5-2) scattered five hits and allowed two earned runs in 7.0 innings to notch the victory in game one. The Retrievers broke open a slim 1-0 advantage by scoring five runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Sophomore left fielder Rick Guarno laced a two-run single to right field and junior shortstop Jared Boyd added an RBI single in the frame. Boyd, junior third baseman Brad Glascock, and senior designated hitter Matt Wiley all went 2-for-3 in the contest. FDU junior catcher Matt Nugent went 2-for-3 and an RBI for the Knights. FDU sophomoreGregg Pleeter (0-5) took the loss as he allowed two earned runs and seven hits in 3.0 inningsIn the nightcap, UMBC freshman righthander Zach Clark (4-2) pitched a complete-game, allowing just eight hits and one earned run. UMBC scored two runs in the third and added three insurance runs in the fifth to put the game out of reach. Boyd drove in both runs in the third on a two-out bases loaded single and added a run-scoring sacrifice fly in the fifth. Glascock accounted for the other two runs with a two-run double in the frame.FDU junior second baseman Tom McLaughlin spoiled Clark's bid for a shutout with a seventh inning RBI single. Junior shortstop Aaron Mayhew and Nugent led the Knights with two hits each. Robert Roll allowed five earned runs in 6.0 inning to drop to 0-3.UMBC freshman right fielder Mike Orlando led UMBC with two hits.
