BASEBALL DEFEATS NAVY 7-4 AT ALUMNI FIELD

The host UMBC Retrievers (16-11) erased a 2-1 deficit in the bottom of the fifth inning by scoring four runs and went on to a 7-4 victory over Navy (9-18) at UMBC Alumni Field on Tuesday. The game was called because of rain, despite the fact that the Midshipmen had the tying run at the plate with two outs in the top of the eighth inning.UMBC sophomore catcher Rick Guarno gave the Retrievers their first lead of the day at 3-2 when he doubled in two runs with one out in the bottom of the fifth inning. Senior shortsop Jared Boyd then followed with a two-run homer to center field, his third bomb of the season to make it 5-2.The Retrievers scored two insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to grab a 7-3 advantage. Junior Chris Yetter produced an RBI infield single and freshman left fielder Jonathan Morgia added an RBI single up the middle.Freshman Matt Farina (2-1) scattered six hits over 7.2 innings and allowed four earned runs. He also fanned a career-high eight batters and walked only one.
