BASEBALL COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF LONG ISLAND

    FR Zach Clark came out of the bullpen to record his third victory of the season this afteroon against Long Island.

    UMBC had seven consecutive hits to lead off a six-run eighth inning as it completed a three-game Northeast Conference sweep of Long Island, 9-5 at LIU Field.The Retrievers (15-11, 8-3 NEC) sent 10 batters to the plate in the decisive frame. Rick Guarno singled up the middle and Jonathan Morgia added a two-run single to chase junior starter Dan Barrios (Riverside, CA). Senior Mike Hopkins (Maywood, NJ) entered, but gave up RBI singles to Matt Wiley and John Shuler.Greg Deboy, Scott Kosmicky and Dan Carpenter also recorded a hit in the inning.Zack Clark (3-2) fired four solid relief innings for UMBC, permitting two runs and five hits with four strikeouts and two walks. Starter Joe Wilson gave up three runs and six hits over five innings with three strikeouts and two walks.UMBC opened the scoring in the first inning. Shuler stroked a leadoff single and Jared Boyd followed with a double before Deboy blasted a three-run homer to left field, his fourth of the season.LIU (1-19, 1-10) tied things in the bottom of the frame. Justin Kotarski (Luzerne, PA) tripled and scored on a groundout by fellow senior Charles Inserra (Brooklyn, NY). Sophomore Khyl Farrison (Suffern, NY) walked and reached third on a single by junior Mike Thompson (Haddon Twsp., NJ). After both players advanced on a balk, senior Tim Shoffler (Cape May, NJ) singled home Thompson.Junior Glen Farkas (Edison, NJ) laced an RBI double in the bottom of the eighth and Kotarski followed with a run-scoring groundout for the Blackbirds, who recorded double-figure hits (11) for the third time in four contests.Barrios (0-6) pitched solidly over the first seven innings before facing just five batters in the eighth. Overall, he surrendered eight runs and 13 hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Hopkins allowed an unearned run and two hits over two relief innings.Guarno and Shuler each collected three hits as part of the Retrievers 15-hit attack en route to their fourth straight victory.
