BASEBALL SWEEPS NEC RIVAL LONG ISLAND IN BROOKLYN

The Retrievers (14-11, 7-3 NEC) swept a doubleheader from Long Island (1-18, 1-9 NEC) in Brooklyn, New York this afternoon. UMBC won the opener by a score of 6-1 and then won game two 17-11.In game one, freshman righthander Eric Butkiewicz inproved to 4-1 on the season as he allowed just 1 earned run, fanned 7 and scattered 5 hits in 7.0 innings of work. JR third baseman Brad Glascock hit a two-run homer and senior Greg Deboy and sophomore Rick Guarno each went 2-for-4 with 2 RBI's.UMBC trailed 6-4 in the second game, but the Retrievers pushed across 8 runs in the top of the 6th inning to grab a 12-6 advantage and never trailed again. Guarno continued his fine hitting as he recorded a game-high 4 hits and added two doubles and 3 RBI's. JR catcher Scott Kosmicky bashed his 4th homer of the season and drove in 4 runs, while SR shortstop Jared Boyd and Glascock (3 RBI's) each added 3 hits. JR righty Chris Yetter (2-1) picked up the win despite allowing two earned runs in 3.0 innings.
