5/20/2007
BALTIMORE--The UMBC baseball team finished the 2007 season, falling 14-6 to Stony Brook on Sunday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
Junior Will Delawter pitched a solid five innings for the Retrievers, giving up three runs on five hits while striking out four, while the Retriever offense scored four runs, putting them down by one going into the sixth. Delawter let up two more runs in the inning off a Seawolf homer, seeing two outs of work in the sixth.
Junior Tom Schlein (1-2) relieved Delawter and recorded one out to end the sixth, but gave up one run in the seventh, before the Retrievers knotted the score at six apiece in the bottom of the seventh. A six-run seventh inning put the Seawolves out of reach as they took a 12-6 lead, holding the Retrievers scoreless for the remainder of the game while adding two more in the ninth.
Junior Mark Lemon started a chain reaction for the Retrievers, singling to right center, which senior Isaac Friedel followed with an RBI triple to right center and senior Mike Scheffel followed with an RBI double to right center. Scheffel scored the final run of the inning off Delawter's single, but Delawter was caught while trying to advance to second on the same play to end the inning, putting the Retrievers up, 3-1.
Delawter added another RBI single in the fifth to put the Retrievers up 4-3, but the Seawolves took back the lead in the top of the sixth with a two-run homer by Brian Witkowski and added another run in the seventh off Rob Leonard's lead-off homer to take the 6-4 lead.
Junior Steve Russo added an RBI single in the seventh and Will Delawter scored on a passed ball to tie the score at six, but the Seawolves six-run eigth inning doubled their score, putting the Retrievers down by six. Stony Brook tacked on another two runs in the ninth for the 14-6 victory.
