UMBC Baseball Falls, 14-8, in Series Finale to Albany

    ALBANY, N.Y.—The UMBC baseball team fell in the series finale, 14-8, to Albany on Sunday at Varsity Field.  A five-run fourth inning propelled the Great Danes (23-25, 10-10 America East) over the Retrievers (12-36, 3-17 America East), who didn’t score their first run until the fifth inning.

     

    Senior Steve Gale led the Retrievers in the loss, going 2-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI, including a two-run shot in the top of the sixth. 

     

    Senior Bo Sauter was on the receiving end of the slugfest, giving up 10 runs (9 earned) on 11 hits in 5.0 innings. 

     

    The Great Danes started off the action with a leadoff triple in the first by Dave West, followed by an RBI double by Leo Corvino and a sac fly by Steve Wyland that gave the Danes a 2-0 lead.

     

    Wyland added two more runs in the bottom of the third with his first of two runs on the day to give put the Retrievers at a 4-0 disadvantage.

     

    A five-run fourth inning gave the Great Danes all they needed to win, holding a 9-0 advantage over the Retrievers.

     

    The Retrievers did score eight runs in the contest, two each batted in by Gale and junior Will Delawter’s RBI double in the seventh, but couldn’t overcome the Danes’ five-run fourth and four-run sixth innings, falling 14-8 in the series finale. 

     

    The Great Danes also took the series, 3-1, after dropping Friday’s game to the Retrievers.

     

    The Retrievers will host Georgetown in their final Tuesday night game on May 15 at 7:00 p.m. at The Baseball Factory Field before hosting Stony Brook in their final home games of the year from May 18-20.
