ALBANY, N.Y.—The UMBC baseball team dropped both sides of a doubleheader, 7-6 and 5-1, to host Albany on Saturday at Varsity Field.  The Retrievers (12-35, 3-16 America East) came within one run of the Great Danes (22-25, 9-10 America East) in the seventh and final inning of Game 1 off sophomore Scott Peddicord’s two-run homer, but couldn’t capitalize to score the tying run, leaving the bases loaded on the final out.

The Retrievers recorded just seven hits in the contest, and committed two errors as compared to the Great Danes’ 11 hits and zero errors.

Junior Mark Lemon registered two of those hits, going a perfect 2-for-2 in Game 1 with one walk and one run scored.

Freshman Marty Zawacki took the loss for the Retrievers, letting up seven runs (five earned) on eight hits while striking out five in 3.2 innings of work.

Senior Isaac Friedel saw his first work of the year, coming in as relief in the seventh and pitching a scoreless inning.

The Retrievers took an early, 2-0, lead in the top of the first thanks to senior Steve Bowen’s two-run homer, and added two more in the second off senior Mike Scheffel’s 2 RBI single before the Great Danes put a run on the board in the bottom of the inning to make it 4-1, Retrievers.

Albany added two more in the third, off a Retriever error and Tom Hill’s RBI sacrifice fly to come within one of the Retrievers, before taking the lead, 7-4, with a four-run fourth inning.

Peddicord’s homer in the seventh put the Retriever within one, but junior Will Delawter grounded out with the bases loaded to give Albany the 7-6 victory.

The Retrievers scored their lone run of Game 2 in the top of the first off a Great Dane error, recording a total of four hits in the contest.

Senior Matt Buchholz was slated with the loss after going 5.0 innings and giving up four runs (three earned) on six hits, while striking out two.  Friedel also came into relief in Game 2, letting up one run on a hit by pitch and three walks.

The Retrievers and Great Danes will face-off in the series finale on Sunday at 12:00 p.m.
