UMBC Baseball Takes Second Conference Game, 6-3, Over Vermont
Junior Will Delawter pitched a complete game victory against Vermont on Friday.
The Retrievers (10-26, 2-11 America East) were led by junior Will Delawter (1-5) who pitched the complete game victory, letting up just three runs (two of them earned) on nine hits while striking out five in 9.0 innings of work.
Delawter also batted as the designated hitter for the Retrievers, going 2-for-5 on the day with a double and two RBI, while sophomore Scott Peddicord recorded the only home run of the day, and his third of the season, with a solo shot in the top of the fourth inning.
Brandon Miles (1-4) took the loss for the Catamounts (15-18, 4-4 America East) going 6.1 innings and letting up four runs (three earned) on seven hits, while striking out none.
The Retrievers got on the board first in the top of the third, off senior Mike Scheffel’s sacrifice fly, but the Catamounts knotted the score at one in the bottom of the inning off Ethan Paquette’s RBI single.
Peddicord’s homer in the fourth gave the Retrievers the 2-1 lead and Delawter’s RBI single in the fifth made that lead, 3-1 in favor of the Retrievers.
The Catamounts quickly countered, however, plating two of their own runs in the bottom of the sixth, off Will Huntington’s sac fly and a Retriever error, to tie the score at three apiece.
The relief for the Catamounts was short-lived as junior Joe Fowler’s RBI single and Delawter’s second RBI of the day off a double gave the Retrievers the lead once again, this time 5-3.
Scheffel’s RBI single in the ninth gave the Retrievers a final insurance run, as they downed the Catamounts, 6-3.
The two teams face each other three more times this weekend, beginning with a doubleheader at 12:00 noon on Saturday.
