Senior Mike Scheffel was 5-for-5 on the day with three doubles in the 6-2 win over Buffalo.

BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team took an early 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third to defeat the visting Buffalo Bulls, 6-2, on Wednesday at The Baseball Factory Field.

Senior Mike Scheffel led the Retrievers (4-6) behind the plate, going a perfect 5-for-5 on the day with three doubles, two singles and one RBI, and two runs scored.

Junior right-hander Steve Evans (2-0) shined on the mound for the Retrievers, letting up just two hits and recording five strikeouts in 5.0 innings.

Shivam Bhan led the Bulls (1-11), going 2-for-4 with one RBI, while Chris Ciesla took the loss, letting up three runs, seven hits, and walking three batters in 5.2 innings.

Neither team scored early in the game, until the Scheffel singled in the third and advanced to second on a balk before sophomore Scott Peddicord brought him home with a double to left center to put the Retrievers on the board.  Senior Steve Gale followed up with a single through the right side to plate Peddicord and put the Retrievers up, 2-0.

The Retrievers added another run in the sixth off sophomore Tom Meaney’s single down the third base line to plate junior Joe Fowler and give the Retrievers a three run advantage.

The Bulls finally answered and scored their only runs of the game in the seventh off a Bhan single and Mike Folli’s fielder’s choice, to make the score 3-2.

The Retrievers quickly answered back on a Gale single that brought Scheffel home and a Fowler double to score Gale, increasing the Retrievers lead to three, 5-2.  The Retrievers added one more in the eighth off one of Scheffel’s three doubles, which scored Meaney.

The Retrievers return to action on Friday when they host Niagara in the first game of a three-game series at 3:00 p.m. at The Baseball Factory Field.
