BASEBALL SWEPT BY DUQUESNE, 10-2 & 11-9

The visiting Duquesne Dukes swept a doubleheader against the UMBC Retrievers by scores of 10-2 and 11-9, Saturday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. Duquesne improved to 7-6 while UMBC fell to 4-6.In the opener, Dukes' senior right-hander Tommy Murtha pitched a complete-game four-hitter and third baseman Pete Maropis went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs to lead the attack. Gary Lee and Jonathan Kelly also drove in a pair of runs for Duquesne. UMBC shortstop Jared Boyd connected on his first homer of the season in a losing cause. Freshman Zach Clark suffered the defeat as he allowed 8 earned runs in 6.0 innings of work.In the nightcap, Duquesne scored two runs in the top of the ninth inning off Mike Johnson, who took the loss for the Retrievers. UMBC trailed 7-4 with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning but senior center fielder John Shuler smacked a three-run double to force extra innings. The Dukes scored two runs in the top of the 8th but the Retrievers forced a ninth inning as senior first baseman Greg Deboy belted a two-run home run, his second of the game, to tie the game at 9-9. Ken Strader pitched two scoreless innings to pick up the win for the Dukes.
