BALTIMORE—The UMBC baseball team has named senior outfielder Mike Scheffel and redshirt junior pitcher Steve Evans team captains and has released the schedule for the 2007 season head coach John Jancuska announced recently.
Captains are chosen from a team vote, which looks for candidates that are strong student-athletes, exhibit leadership through example, handle adversity well, and have strong communication skills, according to Jancuska.
“This is the fourth year for both captains and they exemplify the criteria that was voted on,” said Jancuska. “The coaching staff is extremely pleased with the team’s selection for the 2007 season.”
Scheffel ranked second on the team and eighth in the America East Conference for doubles in 2006 with 14. He also ranked fourth on the team in batting average (.295), slugging percentage (.428), runs batted in (23), and hits (49). Scheffel has played 140 games in his career at UMBC, and needs just 20 more to break into the All-Time Top 10.
Evans saw action in only two games during the 2006 season, finishing the season with a 6.00 ERA and five strikeouts. In his career at UMBC, Evans has an 8.17 ERA, and 49 strikeouts from 98.0 innings pitched.
