BASEBALL FALLS 9-5 AGAINST MAINE

Baltimore, MD - - -The visiting Maine Bears scored 7 runs in the top of the second innings and went on to a 9-5 victory over UMBC, Monday afternoon at UMBC Alumni Field. Maine improved to 3-0 while the Retrievers fell to 3-4.The Bears produced five hits and were aided immensely by a pair of errors by UMBC sophomore second baseman Dan Carpenter in their huge second inning. Six of the runs, which came off Retriever freshman starter Andy Glass, were unearned runs. Maine shortstop Mark Reichley and designated hitter Mike Ross each contributed two-run singles in the frame. Ross finished the day 2-for-4 with three RBI's and Ross also knocked in three runs.UMBC senior shortstop Jared Boyd continued his hot hitting with a game-high three hits, including his 6th and 7th double of the season.Bears starter Mike MacDonald (1-0) earned the victory as he allowed just two earned runs in 5.0 innings while fanning seven Retrievers. Glass (0-1) suffered the loss despite allowing just one earned run in 5.0 innings of work.- - -UMBC - - -
