BASEBALL COMPLETES THREE-GAME SWEEP OF BINGHAMTON
The UMBC Retrievers (3-3) completed a three-game sweep of visiting Binghamton (4-7) with an 8-6 victory at chilly Alumni Field this afternoon.The game was deadlocked at 6-6 in the sixth inning, but UMBC senior center fielder John Shuler smacked a game-winning home run to right center to lead off the frame. Sophomore second baseman Dan Carpenter provided some insurance with a two-out single that plated senior shortstop Jared Boyd in the bottom of the seventh.UMBC trailed 5-3 in the fifth inning but scored three runs to grab a 6-5 lead. Senior first baseman Jeff Fraley led off the inning with his first home run of the season and junior third baseman Brad Glascock belted a two-run bomb later in the inning. The Bearcats tied the score in the top of the sixth inning on a double-play groundout.Freshman lefthander Kyle Wildasin picked up his first career victory as he allowed just one run in 4.0 innings of relief.UMBC junior catcher Scott Kosmicky launched his first homer of the season in the first inning and Boyd went 3-for-4 with a paie of doubles.
