BASEBALL SWEEPS BINGHAMTON AT ALUMNI FIELD

The host UMBC Retrievers swept Binghamton, 2-0 and 7-5 in a doubleheader at UMBC Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon. UMBC improved to 2-3 on the season while the Bearcats dropped to 4-6.In the opener, UMBC sophomore lefthander Joe Wilson pitched a complete-game, four-hit shutout to pick up his first win as a Retriever. JR catcher Scott Kosmicky produced a run-scoring single in the bottom of the first inning and SR Greg Deboy added an RBI sacrifice fly in the second.UMBC won the nightcap in dramatic fashion, scoring four runs in their final at-bat of a game that was called after just 6 innings due to rain. The Retrievers trailed 5-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning but tied the game on a two-out, two-run double by JR designated hitter Rick Fritz. UMBC freshman right fielder Joe Muscillo then reached first on an error. Senior John Shuler followed with a game-winning two-run triple to right center to end the contest.
