BASEBALL SWEPT AT LIBERTY

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Liberty baseball team combined for 24 runs on 31Hits to sweep a double-header from the Maryland-Baltimore County Retrievers,winning the games by scores of 7-0 and 17-1 at Worthington StadiumSaturday afternoon.In the first game, Liberty broke a scoreless tie with three runs in thefourth inning. All three runs were scored on a home run to left field byMatt Hagen (Jr., 3B, Eaton, Colo.). The Flames added four runs in theseventh to make the final 7-0. Jason Jones (So., RHP, Pasadena, Md.) pitched seven strong innings,Giving up no runs on just five hits and striking out five batters to get thewin. UMBC's Joe Wilson pitched five innings, giving up three runs on fivehits to take the loss. At the plate, Larry Wayne York (Jr., 2B, Ramseur, N.C.) went 4-for-4With two RBI. Hagen drove in three runs with his homer in the fourth. For theRetrievers, Brad Glascock went 2-for-3.In game two, the Flames pounded out 21 hits on their way to a 17-1 win.Joey Monahan (Jr., SS, Marietta, Ga.) tied the Liberty Division I record withthree home runs to lead the Flames at the plate. In all, Monahan drovein seven runs in the game, two shy of the school record. The Flames scored in every inning of the seven-inning contest. Libertyjumped out to a 7-0 lead in the first two innings, scoring three runs inthe first and four in the second. The Flames biggest inning of the game camein the fifth when they scored six runs to break the game open. In game two, Steve Horstman (Sr., RHP, Elyria, Ohio) pitched fiveinnings, giving up just one run on one hit to pick up the win.
