SEVEN-RUN SIXTH PROPELS VERMONT TO 14-5 SERIES FINALE WIN OVER UMBC BASEBALL

    Steve Russo had two hits on Sunday for UMBC.

    Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC baseball team (18-30, 5-13 AE) dropped a 14-5 decision to Vermont (16-30, 14-6 AE) on Sunday in the series finale of a four-game America East Conference series at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  Vermont utilized a seven-run sixth inning to secure the win as they take the series, 3-1. 

     

    Jeff Heppner, who went 3-for-4 with four RBI, three doubles and two runs scored, doubled to lead off the sixth inning, starting the Catamounts big inning.  Two walks loaded the bases and with one out, Jim Chapman singled down the left field line, bringing in two on the hit.  After getting the second out of the inning, UMBC would walk two more batters, loading the bases and walking another run in for the third of the inning.  Matt Naimoli singled in a run, bringing the inning back around to Heppner, who doubled to right field, clearing the base paths for the seven-run inning.

     

    UMBC added two in eighth while Vermont tacked on three more in the ninth for the 14-5 final.  UMBC recorded seven hits in the game with Joe Fowler going 2-for-4, Steve Russo 2-for-3 and Mark Lemon 2-for-4. 

     

    Time Comiskey took the loss, allowing four runs on three hits with thee walks.  Mike Fitzpatrick, Sean Rae, Bo Sauter and Brian Duffy finished the game for UMBC.

     

    Jeremiah Bayer got the win going 3.1 innings to allow three hits and two runs.  Keith Rakus started and went the first 4.2 innings, allowing three runs on four hits.  Brandon Miles pitched the ninth. 

     

    Chapman matched Heppner’s three hits with a 3-for-5 day with three RBI and three runs scored.  Naimoli also had a multi-hit game with two hits for Vermont. 

     

    UMBC concludes its home slate with Towson on Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
