Baltimore, Md. – The Towson Tigers (16-32) defeated UMBC (17-27) by a final score of 5-2 on Tuesday night at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC, snapping a three-game win streak by the Retrievers while breaking a three-game slide by the Tigers.
Towson scored first in the third inning as J.P. Debrowski (Sykesville, Md./Glenelg) singled for the first Tigers’ hit of the game. Debrowski moved up to second base as Kyle Skellchock (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) was hit by a pitch and scored on a RBI single by Adam Heffron (Laurel, Md./Hammond).
UMBC tied the game in the bottom of the third inning as Joe Fowler (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) led off with a double off the left center field fence, just missing a home run on the hit. Fowler moved to third on a fly out to right field by Steve Bowen (Pasadena, Md./Catonsville C.C.) and scored on a RBI single by Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) to center field.
The Retrievers took their only lead of the game when Bowen hit his seventh home run of the season over the center field fence, giving the Retrievers a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the fifth inning.
UMBC’s pitching staff held Towson to two hits until the seventh inning as the Tigers bats woke up, sending 10 batters to the plate to record five hits and four runs, taking a 5-2 lead. Debrowski highlighted the inning with a one out double down the left field line scoring two runners on the play. Debrowski scored on a bases loaded single by Heffron while the Tigers fourth run came in as Brian Conley (Gaithersburg, Md./Quince Orchard) reached on an error.
Josh Brown (Annapolis, MD./Catonsville C.C.) earned the win for Towson to move to 3-2 on the year. Conley pitched two perfect innings in the seventh and eighth, setting up Steve Johnson (Severn, MD./Old Mill) in the ninth to earn his third save of the year.
Tom Schlein (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) took the loss for UMBC, allowing three runs on three hits in 1.1 innings. The loss was Schlein’s first of the season as he falls to 4-1 on the year. The Retrievers used seven pitchers in the game with none going more than two full innings.
Debrowski led the Tigers with a 2-for-4 performance, scoring two runs and driving in two as well. Heffron went 2-for-5 with two RBI.
Mark Lemon (Wilmington, Del./St. Mark’s) went 3-for-4 while Bowen was 2-for-4 with a RBI and run scored for UMBC.
UMBC hosts Vermont in a four-game America East Conference series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.
