DAWG BITES

Conference Season Underway

The America East Conference season heads into its sixth weekend with another full slate of league action.  UMBC currently sits in last place in the league with a 4-10 mark while there are five teams with a league record of .500 or better.  UMBC’s chances of making the four-team tournament have dwindled but are not out of reach as the Retrievers have four games against the league’s current top team in Vermont and finish the season at Stony Brook.

This week’s conference games:

Vermont at UMBC

Hartford at Maine

Stony Brook at Albany

Binghamton has the bye week

Scheffel’s Two-Out Double Lifts Retrievers to Walk-Off Win

Mike Scheffel hit a two-run double to right center field in the bottom of the ninth inning as UMBC rallied from two runs down to defeat Georgetown, 8-7, on Tuesday night at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  With one out and a runner on first base in the top of the ninth, Drew Dargen broke a 5-5 tie with a two-run home run over the left field fence off of UMBC reliever Dan Blewitt.  The Retrievers, however, would rally from two runs down for the second time in the game with a three-run ninth inning.

After a lead off walk led to the exit Matthew Johnson, Daniel Kennedy entered the game to close for the Hoyas.  Kennedy induced a center field fly out by Joe Fowler but allowed a single to Steve Gale to place runners at the corners with one out.  Chris Cerullo, who represented the tying run, pitch ran for Gale at first base.  Steve Bowen singled home the Retrievers first run of the inning while moving Cerullo into scoring position at second base.  Zach Clark grounded to short in which looked to be a game ending double play, but a bobble by the Hoyas shortstop led to just one out and runners again at the corners with two outs.

Scheffel than laced a shot into deep right field, bringing Cerullo home and Clark around from first for the game winning double and a UMBC 8-7 win.

Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.
