Mike Scheffel was one of three UMBC starters to bat over .400 last week.

Baltimore, Md.UMBC hosts Mount St. Mary’s on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  The Retrievers travel this weekend to Hartford for a critical conference series.  Inside news and notes this week, Joe Fowler is on another hit streak and leads the league in doubles, Mark Lemon is tied for UMBC’s all-time hit by pitch mark and a look at where the Retrievers stack up in the conference picture.

Tuesday Night Baseball Continues, UMBC Hosts Albany For Conference Series

Tuesday Night baseball continues this week as the Retrievers host Mount St. Mary’s for the finale of six consecutive home games.  The Retrievers and Mountaineers will begin with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.  This is the first and only meeting this season between the two programs that regular met in the Northeast Conference together.  Last year UMBC won the only meeting, 11-1.

 

In America East Conference action this week, UMBC travels to Hartford in a four-game series beginning Friday at 3 p.m.  Friday’s tilt will be a single nine-inning game, followed by a two-seven inning doubleheader on Saturday starting at 12 p.m. and a 12 p.m. nine-inning series finale on Sunday.  Last year UMBC swept the Hawks in three games.

Conference Season Underway

The America East Conference season heads into its fourth weekend with another full slate of league action.  UMBC is going into this weekend with some must win games to reach the conference tournament.  The Retrievers are currently 3-7 in sixth place.  Teams two through four have six wins each while Albany is at 4-4, setting up a critical conference series between the Retrievers and Hawks this weekend if UMBC is going to make a run at one of the four conference tournament berths.     

 

This week’s conference games:

        UMBC at Hartford

        Maine at Binghamton

        Vermont at Albany

        Stony Brook has the conference bye this week 

        UMBC’s bye is the week of May 5-7 

 

Weekend Sluggers

Last weekend in America East Conference action against Albany, UMBC as a team hit .324 with four starters hitting over .400.  Steve Bowen batted .462 and drove in the game winning run in the second game of the series.  Joe Fowler batted .438 with five doubles and a triple and Ian Carman batted .400.  Mike Scheffel played in all four games and started two batted .545 with six hits in 11 at bats. 

 

Comeback Kids

UMBC showed the ability to come from behind over the weekend.  In the first game of the series, UMBC scored a single run in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game and send it to extra innings.  In the 10th inning, Carl Wolf singled in the winning run for the walk-off victory.  In the second game, UMBC scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to tie Albany, 7-7.  Heavy rains forced the game to be suspended until Sunday as UMBC in the bottom of the seventh used a Mike Scheffel double to set up Steve Bowen’s game-winning RBI single.  In the third game of the series, UMBC scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh behind back-to-back-to-back doubles by Brian Moran, Zach Clark and Joe Fowler to tie the game at 5-5.  Albany, however, scored two in the eighth to win that game of the series. 

 

Wolf Makes Return In Grand Fashion

Redshirt freshman Carl Wolf made his return to the line up in grand fashion last week.  Wolf, who broke his arm earlier this season, returned to the UMBC line up against George Washington on Tuesday night to pinch hit in the fifth inning. Wolf started in the series opener against Albany and cracked the game winning hit in the bottom of the tenth inning as UMBC came-from-behind to win 5-4. 

 

Looking For Midweek Win

UMBC on Tuesday night will be looking for their first midweek win since defeating Duke, 4-0 on March 22.  UMBC has gone 0-5 in midweek games since that win over Duke.  UMBC opened the season 4-2 in midweek games.

 

Fowler Begins New Hit Streak

Joe Fowler is up to an eight game hit streak that began one game after his 17-game hit streak ended on April 11 against Navy.  Fowler has hit safely in 26 of his last 27 games.  Last week he batted .450, going 9-for-20 with six runs scored, five doubles, two triples and a home run.  Eight of nine hits on the week were extra base hits as the sophomore outfielder drove in six RBI and slugged 1.050.

 

Fowler For Second Consecutive Season Carrying Hot Conference Average

Joe Fowler picked up where he left off last season during league play.  Fowler batted .356 his freshman year with 21 hits and 18 RBI in 16 America East Conference starts.  Fowler in 10 America East Conference games is batting .475 with 19 hits, 10 doubles, a triple and two home runs.  Fowler has recorded 14 RBI and scored 10 runs as well in league play.        

 

Clark’s Streak Stopped At 20-games

Senior Zach Clark’s hit streak went to 20-games before going hitless in two at bats in the series finale against Binghamton.  Clark now holds UMBC’s hit streak record in each of the last three seasons, recording a season-long 13-game hit streak during the 2004 season and a 14-game hit streak during the 2005 season. 

 

Fowler Goes Yard With Retrievers Down To Their Last Strike

Joe Fowler was down 0-2 in the count with UMBC trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning with two outs when the sophomore outfielder sent a shot over the right field fence.  The three-run home run propelled UMBC into the lead at 6-5.  Eddie Bach sat down Binghamton in order in the bottom of the seventh for the win. 

 

Freshman Eddie Bach Ranks First In The Conference For Strikeouts

UMBC freshman Eddie Bach ranks first in the America East Conference in strikeouts with 51 on the year.  Bach on the year is 3-3 with a 5.91 ERA.  He has a team-high 14 appearances and has held opponents to a .267 batting average, sixth in the America East.  Bach has two saves as well on the year.

 

Fowler Leads League In Doubles, Second in Home Runs

Joe Fowler leads UMBC with 17 doubles on the year and ranks second with seven home runs.  Fowler is batting a team second best .331 on the year with a .640 slugging percentage.  Last week Fowler recorded five doubles, two triples and a home run as he tallied eight extra base hits out of nine total hits on the week. 

 

Team Defense First In the Conference

UMBC with a team fielding percentage of .963 leads the America East Conference.  UMBC has made 49 errors on 1,328 chances this season.  UMBC has turned 21 double plays and thrown out 19 batters trying to steal. 

 

Duke Sweep Comes On Jancuska’s 28th Anniversary of First Career Coaching Victory

UMBC’s two-game sweep over Duke came on the 28th anniversary of UMBC head coach John Jancuska’s first career coaching victory.  On March 22, 1978, Jancuska’s Retrievers defeated John’s Hopkins 7-4 and 5-0 in a doubleheader for the UMBC skipper’s first coaching victories.  Jancuska following the two wins moved to 610 career victories and ranks in the top-50 for active NCAA Division-I coaches in victories. 

 

Clark Comes Up A Single Short From The Cycle

Senior Zach Clark came a single short from the cycle in the opening game against Lafayette.  Clark hit a solo home run, doubled and than tripled in the ninth inning.  Clark went 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored. 

 

Tom Schlein Named Co-Pitcher of the Week by America East Conference (3-14)

UMBC pitcher Tom Schlein was named America East Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 12, 2006.  The award recognizes all games played up until March 12 as Schlein in three appearances produced a 1.04 ERA with two wins. 

 

Schlein, a sophomore relief pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with one strikeout in the Retrievers 7-6 win over Navy.  Schlein also entered the game against Manhattan in the fifth inning with two on and UMBC leading 7-5 with one out. Manhattan on a single scored two runs to tie the game, neither of which was credited to Schlein as the lefty was able to get UMBC out of the jam. Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.

 

UMBC Touches The Plate 21 Times Against William & Mary

UMBC crossed home plate 21 times in the middle of a three-game series with William & Mary as the Retrievers defeated the Tribe, 21-7 for their first win of the season.  UMBC tallied 18 hits in the game, led by a 4-for-6 performance by Brian Moran.  UMBC’s 21 runs are the most since scoring 23 runs in a 23-13 win over Quinnipiac on April 29, 2002. 

 

Jancuska Enters Season With Among Nations Top Active Coaches In Wins

UMBC skipper John Jancuska entered the 2006 season with 602 career wins, ranking 45th among active Division I coaches for career wins.  With 13 wins this season, Jancuska has 615 for his career.
