Tom Rinaldi and the Retrievers host five games at home this week.

Baltimore, Md.UMBC this week hosts five games at UMBC, including Tuesday Night Baseball against George Washington and a three-day, four-game weekend conference series against Albany.  News and notes this week looks at two hit streaks coming to an end, the Retrievers seventh inning win over Binghamton and a look at the week ahead.

Tuesday Night Baseball Continues, UMBC Hosts Albany For Conference Series

Tuesday Night baseball continues this week as the Retrievers host George Washington for the start of six consecutive home games.  The Retrievers and Colonials will begin with first pitch slated for 7 p.m.  The game is a rematch from earlier this season as UMBC took a 4-3 lead with three-runs in the ninth inning before the Colonials in the bottom half of the inning scored two for a 5-4 win. 

 

In America East Conference action this week, UMBC hosts Albany in a four-game series beginning Friday at 7 p.m.  Friday night’s tilt will be a single nine-inning game, followed by a two-seven inning doubleheader on Saturday starting at 1 p.m. and a 12 p.m. nine-inning series finale on Sunday.  Last year UMBC was swept by the Great Danes in three games.

Conference Season Underway

The America East Conference season heads into its third weekend with another full slate of league action.  UMBC looks to rebound from a tough start after facing some of the toughest league competition the last two weeks.  The Retrievers are currently 1-5 in seventh place while teams ranked four through six only have two wins.  Albany is at 2-2, setting a critical conference series between the Retrievers and Great Danes this weekend.    

 

This week’s conference games:

        Albany at UMBC

        Binghamton at Vermont

        Hartford at Stony Brook

        Maine has the conference bye this week 

        UMBC’s bye is the week of May 5-7 

 

UMBC In NCAA Statistics

UMBC as a team ranks high in a couple of NCAA charts as the national rankings were made available for the first time on Tuesday, April 11 for game through April 9, 2006.  UMBC as a team ranks 17th in the nation in doubles per game at 2.33.  The Retrievers also are the 34th best fielding team in the country with a .970 fielding percentage.  Zach Clark batting .415 on the year ranks 37th individually.  NCAA statistics will be available every Tuesday at NCAA.org and therefore in this addition of news and notes, due not reflect UMBC’s last four games. 

 

Fowler Goes Yard With Retrievers Down To Their Last Strike

Joe Fowler was down 0-2 in the count with UMBC trailing 5-3 in the top of the seventh inning with two outs when the sophomore outfielder sent a shot over the right field fence.  The three-run home run propelled UMBC into the lead at 6-5.  Eddie Bach sat down Binghamton in order in the bottom of the seventh for the win. 

 

Fowler’s Hit Streak Ends At 18, Clark’s  Streak Stopped At 20-games

Sophomore outfielder Joe Fowler and senior Zach Clark entered last week with impressive hit streaks before both came to an end.  Fowler’s streak stopped on Tuesday night as he went hitless against Navy.  Fowler, however, recorded hits in the final three games of the week and has hits in 21 of the last 22 games.  Clark’s streak went to 20-games before going hitless in two at bats in the series finale against Binghamton.  Clark now holds UMBC’s hit streak record in each of the last three seasons, recording a season-long 13 hit streak during the 2004 season and a 14-game hit streak during the 2005 season. 

 

Zach Clark Enters Week Third In League In Batting Average

With a .389 batting average in 28 games, Zach Clark ranks third in the league in hitting heading into the week.  Clark recently ended a 20-game hit streak.  Entering the week, Clark has 42 hits in 108 at bats, recording seven doubles, a triple and three home runs.  Clark has driven in 17 runs and scored 19 this season. 

 

Fowler Starts Strong To Begin League Play

Joe Fowler picked up where he left off last season during league play.  Fowler batted .356 his freshman year with 21 hits and 18 RBI in 16 America East Conference starts.  To date this season, Fowler is batting .500 in six conference starts, recording 12 hits in 24 at bats with two home runs, nine RBI and five doubles.    

 

Freshman Eddie Bach Ranks Second In The Conference For Strikeouts

UMBC freshman Eddie Bach ranks second to Maine’s Scott Robinson for the America East Conference lead in strikeouts with 42 on the year.  Bach on the year is 2-3 with a 6.44 ERA.  He has a team-high 11 appearances and has held opponents to a .266 batting average, 10th in the America East.  Bach has two saves as well on the year.

 

Team Defense First In the Conference

UMBC with a team fielding percentage of .968 leads the America East Conference.  UMBC has made 37 errors on 1,139 chances this season.  UMBC has turned 14 double plays and thrown out 13 batters trying to steal. 

 

Duke Sweep Comes On Jancuska’s 28th Anniversary of First Career Coaching Victory

UMBC’s two-game sweep over Duke came on the 28th anniversary of UMBC head coach John Jancuska’s first career coaching victory.  On March 22, 1978, Jancuska’s Retrievers defeated John’s Hopkins 7-4 and 5-0 in a doubleheader for the UMBC skipper’s first coaching victories.  Jancuska following the two wins moved to 610 career victories and ranks in the top-50 for active NCAA Division-I coaches in victories. 

 

Clark Comes Up A Single Short From The Cycle

Senior Zach Clark came a single short from the cycle in the opening game against Lafayette.  Clark hit a solo home run, doubled and than tripled in the ninth inning.  Clark went 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored. 

 

Tom Schlein Named Co-Pitcher of the Week by America East Conference (3-14)

UMBC pitcher Tom Schlein was named America East Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 12, 2006.  The award recognizes all games played up until March 12 as Schlein in three appearances produced a 1.04 ERA with two wins. 

 

Schlein, a sophomore relief pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with one strikeout in the Retrievers 7-6 win over Navy.  Schlein also entered the game against Manhattan in the fifth inning with two on and UMBC leading 7-5 with one out. Manhattan on a single scored two runs to tie the game, neither of which was credited to Schlein as the lefty was able to get UMBC out of the jam. Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.

 

UMBC Touches The Plate 21 Times Against William & Mary

UMBC crossed home plate 21 times in the middle of a three-game series with William & Mary as the Retrievers defeated the Tribe, 21-7 for their first win of the season.  UMBC tallied 18 hits in the game, led by a 4-for-6 performance by Brian Moran.  UMBC’s 21 runs are the most since scoring 23 runs in a 23-13 win over Quinnipiac on April 29, 2002. 

 

Jancuska Enters Season With Among Nations Top Active Coaches In Wins

UMBC skipper John Jancuska entered the 2006 season with 602 career wins, ranking 45th among active Division I coaches for career wins.  With 11 wins this season, Jancuska has 613 for his career.
