UMBC BASEBALL GIVES UP EIGHT IN THE THIRD IN 13-5 LOSS TO BINGHAMTON

    VESTAL, N.Y. - Binghamton (14-10-1, 3-1 AE) exploded for eight runs in the third inning en route to an 13-5 win over visiting UMBC (10-19, 0-4 AE) Thursday afternoon at Varsity Field. The loss is the Retrievers seventh straight and fourth consecutive conference loss. 

    Trailing 2-1, Binghamton batted around in the third inning, scoring eight runs on five hits and three walks. Senior center fielder Aaron Davis belted a two-run double to right field and junior first baseman Brendon Hitchcock added a two-out, two-run single to highlight the inning.

    Hitchcock, mired in a 3-for-19 slump entering the game, went 4-for-4 with four RBI. He added RBI singles in the seventh and eighth innings.

     

    Sophomore pitcher Scott Diamond picked up his team-best fourth win of the season (4-3) for the Bearcats. Diamond scattered seven hits and allowed four earned runs in the complete-game win.

     

    UMBC was led by a 2-for-5 performance from Joe Fowler.  Fowler, after seeing his 17-game hit streak end last Tuesday night, doubled in the first inning and scored as Zach Clark reached on a fielding error. 

     

    Clark added a hit later in the game has he extended his hit streak to 19-consecutive games.  Brian Moran, Mike Scheffel, Mark Lemon, Tom Meaney and Scott Peddicord all had hits as part of UMBC’s eight on the game.  They were out hit 14-8 by the Bearcats.

     

    Tim Comiskey started for UMBC, going 3.0 innings and allowing nine runs on five hits with five walks.  Comiskey falls to 1-4 on the year.  Matt Bucholz, Bo Sauter and Mike Fitzpatrick all pitched in relief. 

    The teams are scheduled to play a doubleheader Friday beginning at noon.

    The game was delayed 46 minutes in the bottom of the fourth inning due to lightening in the area.
