  • Tuesday Night Baseball Flyer

    The Retrievers take on Navy at 7 p.m. Tuesday Night at UMBC.

    Tuesday night baseball returns to UMBC this week as the Retrievers host Navy at 7 p.m. at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  The first 150 fans will receive a free hot dog and coke.  Tuesday night baseball runs starting this Tuesday through the next six weeks, with a game against area collegiate programs every Tuesday night starting at 7 p.m.  Inside news and notes this week, check out Joe Fowler and Zach Clark’s 17-game hit streaks, and up date on the conference season and a look at the week ahead.

    Tuesday Night Baseball Begins, UMBC travels to Binghamton For Conference Series

    UMBC brings back Tuesday night baseball as the Retrievers host Navy on April 11 at 7 p.m.  Tuesday night baseball at UMBC has become a student and community favorite over the past couple of years.  In 2004 UMBC averaged just over 160 fans during week day night games.  Last season in nine home weekday night games, the Retrievers averaged over 200 in attendance per game.  In kicking off the first Tuesday night game, the first 150 fans will received a free hot dog and soda. 

     

    UMBC travels to Binghamton for a four-game series with the Bearcats.  Due to Easter weekend, UMBC will begin the conference series on Thursday at 3 p.m.  UMBC will play a doubleheader on Friday at 12 p.m. with the series finale at 12 p.m. on Saturday.

    Conference Season Underway

    The America East Conference officially got underway last weekend as Maine moved into first place with its three-game sweep over UMBC.  America East Conference rules state that with the four-game format, a rain out will not be made up.  In other action, Binghamton won two of three against Stony Brook to move into second place while Hartford and Albany were the only series over the weekend to get all four games in.  the two programs split the series and stand at 2-2.    

     

    This week’s conference games:

            UMBC at Binghamton

            Stony Brook at Maine

            Vermont at Hartford

            Albany has the conference bye this week 

            UMBC’s bye is the week of May 5-7 

     

    Fowler and Clark Extend Hit Streaks To 13-Games

    Sophomore outfielder Joe Fowler and senior Zach Clark extended personal hit streaks to 17-games each with the two each recording a hit in four starts last week.   Both hit streaks are career best for the two.  Clark’s hit streak began at Navy (3-8-06) as the Retriever designated hitter has eight multi-hit games during that stretch, including four three-hit games.  Fowler’s streak began at home against Manhattan (3-12-06). 

     

    Zach Clark Enters Week Second In League In Batting Average

    With a .415 batting average in 24 games, Zach Clark ranks second in the league in hitting heading into the week.  Clark enters the week with a 17-game hitting streak.  Entering the week, Clark has 39 hits in 97 at bats, recording seven doubles, a triple and three home runs.  Clark has driven in 17 runs and scored 19 this season. 

     

    Fowler Starts Strong To Begin League Play

    Joe Fowler picked up where he left off last season during league play.  Fowler batted .356 his freshman year with 21 hits and 18 RBI in 16 America East Conference starts.  In the opening series against Maine, the sophomore outfielder batted .667 with eight hits, three doubles, a home run and five RBI.  Fowler was 4-for-4 on the opening night and 7-for-8 after the second game of the series. 

     

    Freshman Eddie Bach Tied For Conference Lead In Strikeouts

    UMBC freshman Eddie Bach is tied with Maine’s Scott Robinson for the America East Conference lead in strikeouts with 40 on the year.  Bach on the year is 1-3 with a 6.59 ERA.  He has a team-high 10 appearances and has held opponents to a .269 batting average, 10th in the America East.  Bach has two saves as well on the year.

     

    UMBC As A Team Among Conference Leaders

    UMBC ranks at the top of all three team categories.  The Retrievers rank fourth in batting with a .287 average, third in pitching with a 5.81 ERA and lead the league in field with a .970 fielding percentage. 

     

    Duke Sweep Comes On Jancuska’s 28th Anniversary of First Career Coaching Victory

    UMBC’s two-game sweep over Duke came on the 28th anniversary of UMBC head coach John Jancuska’s first career coaching victory.  On March 22, 1978, Jancuska’s Retrievers defeated John’s Hopkins 7-4 and 5-0 in a doubleheader for the UMBC skipper’s first coaching victories.  Jancuska following the two wins moved to 610 career victories and ranks in the top-50 for active NCAA Division-I coaches in victories. 

     

    Clark Comes Up A Single Short From The Cycle

    Senior Zach Clark came a single short from the cycle in the opening game against Lafayette.  Clark hit a solo home run, doubled and than tripled in the ninth inning.  Clark went 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored. 

     

    Tom Schlein Named Co-Pitcher of the Week by America East Conference (3-14)

    UMBC pitcher Tom Schlein was named America East Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 12, 2006.  The award recognizes all games played up until March 12 as Schlein in three appearances produced a 1.04 ERA with two wins. 

     

    Schlein, a sophomore relief pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with one strikeout in the Retrievers 7-6 win over Navy.  Schlein also entered the game against Manhattan in the fifth inning with two on and UMBC leading 7-5 with one out. Manhattan on a single scored two runs to tie the game, neither of which was credited to Schlein as the lefty was able to get UMBC out of the jam. Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.

     

    UMBC Touches The Plate 21 Times Against William & Mary

    UMBC crossed home plate 21 times in the middle of a three-game series with William & Mary as the Retrievers defeated the Tribe, 21-7 for their first win of the season.  UMBC tallied 18 hits in the game, led by a 4-for-6 performance by Brian Moran.  UMBC’s 21 runs are the most since scoring 23 runs in a 23-13 win over Quinnipiac on April 29, 2002. 

     

    Jancuska Enters Season With Among Nations Top Active Coaches In Wins

    UMBC skipper John Jancuska entered the 2006 season with 602 career wins, ranking 45th among active Division I coaches for career wins.  With 10 wins this season, Jancuska has 612 for his career.
