Ian Carman and the Retrievers hold the top team fielding percentage in the conference heading into this week.

Baltimore, Md.UMBC will be in action five times this week as the Retrievers travel to Delaware on Tuesday, Towson Wednesday and conclude the week with three games at Longwood.

UMBC Takes Show On The Road This Week

After playing eight of their last 10 games at home, the UMBC baseball team hits the road this week for the start of a six-game road swing.  UMBC will play at Delaware and Towson in mid week games before traveling to Longwood for a three-game weekend series with the Lancers.  UMBC last year went 0-1 against Delaware and 0-3 against Towson.

UMBC Sweeps Duke Before Dropping Three To Lafayette

UMBC last week hit a high when the Retrievers downed Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) member Duke 7-1 and 4-0 in a double header.  In game one Joe Fowler hit a three-run home run in the sixth inning and tallied a two-RBI single the seventh with a career-high five RBI game.  Jon Pavlis was outstanding on the mound, going the complete game for his third complete game in five starts.  Pavlis allowed one run on five hits while striking out two.

 

In game two Sean Rae went 5.1 innings, striking out five and holding the Blue Devils to no runs on five hits.  Rae ran into trouble in the sixth inning, allowing the Blue Devils to load the bases with one out.  Eddie Bach entered the game in relief, striking out the next two batters to get the Retrievers out of the inning unscathed.  In the bottom of the seventh, Bach struck out two more Blue Devils en route to completing the save, his second save.  Bach did not allow a hit in 1.2 innings, striking out four and walking one.  Steve Gale led UMBC by going 2-for-4 at the plate with two doubles, two RBI and a run scored.   UMBC scored all four runs in the third inning. 

 

The Retrievers following their series against Duke, hosted Lafayette for three games over the weekend.  UMBC was unable to carry its momentum into the series with the Leopards as Lafayette won all three games, taking game one 8-5, game two 14-4 and game three, 7-5.  In the first two games the Leopards jumped out on UMBC early, scoring four runs in the first of game one and five runs in the first inning of game two.  In game three UMBC tied the game at 5-5 in the eighth inning, but two unearned runs in the top of the ninth by the Leopards allowed them to complete the series sweep. 

 

Over the course of the week, Zach Clark led UMBC with a .571 batting average in five starts.  Clark recorded 12 hits, five runs, two doubles, triple and home run while driving in seven runs.  Sean Rae in two appearances recorded a 0.00 ERA, pitching 7.1 innings and allowing seven hits and striking out eight.  Rae earned the win against Duke but gave up to unearned runs against Lafayette to take a loss against the Leopards.

Zach Clark Enters Week Leading League In Batting Average

With a .482 batting average in 15 games, Zach Clark leads the league in hitting heading into the week.  Clark enters the week with an eight game hitting streak and batted .571 in five starts last week.  Entering the week, Clark has 27 hits in 56 at bats, recording four doubles, a triple and two home runs.  Clark has drove in 12 runs and scored 11 this season.  Clark also ranks first with a  524 on base percentage and second with a .696 slugging percentage on the season. 

 

UMBC As A Team Among Conference Leaders

UMBC ranks at the top of all three team categories.  The Retrievers rank third in batting with a .301 average, third in pitching with a 5.81 ERA and lead the league in field with a .968 fielding percentage.  First baseman Steve Gale has yet to record an error with 123 put outs and 14 assists in 137 chances on the season.        

 

Duke Sweep Comes On Jancuska’s 28th Anniversary of First Career Coaching Victory

UMBC’s two-game sweep over Duke came on the 28th anniversary of UMBC head coach John Jancuska’s first career coaching victory.  On March 22, 1978, Jancuska’s Retrievers defeated John’s Hopkins 7-4 and 5-0 in a doubleheader for the UMBC skipper’s first coaching victories.  Jancuska following the two wins moved to 610 career victories and ranks in the top-50 for active NCAA Division-I coaches in victories. 

 

Clark Comes Up A Single Short From The Cycle

Senior Zach Clark came a single short from the cycle in the opening game against Lafayette.  Clark hit a solo home run, doubled and than tripled in the ninth inning.  Clark went 3-for-5 in the game with three RBI and two runs scored. 

 

Tom Schlein Named Co-Pitcher of the Week by America East Conference (3-14)

UMBC pitcher Tom Schlein was named America East Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 12, 2006.  The award recognizes all games played up until March 12 as Schlein in three appearances produced a 1.04 ERA with two wins. 

 

Schlein, a sophomore relief pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with one strikeout in the Retrievers 7-6 win over Navy.  Schlein also entered the game against Manhattan in the fifth inning with two on and UMBC leading 7-5 with one out. Manhattan on a single scored two runs to tie the game, neither of which was credited to Schlein as the lefty was able to get UMBC out of the jam. Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.

 

UMBC Touches The Plate 21 Times Against William & Mary

UMBC crossed home plate 21 times in the middle of a three-game series with William & Mary as the Retrievers defeated the Tribe, 21-7 for their first win of the season.  UMBC tallied 18 hits in the game, led by a 4-for-6 performance by Brian Moran.  UMBC’s 21 runs are the most since scoring 23 runs in a 23-13 win over Quinnipiac on April 29, 2002. 

 

Jancuska Enters Season With Among Nations Top Active Coaches In Wins

UMBC skipper John Jancuska entered the 2006 season with 602 career wins, ranking 45th among active Division I coaches for career wins.  With eight wins this season, Jancuska has 610 for his career.

Senior Duo Continues To Climb Into The Retriever Record Books

The Retriever pitching duo of Zach Clark and Jon Pavlis continue to climb closer to top-10 status all-time in the UMBC career pitching record books.  Clark, who has been a Retriever the last four years is fourth all-time in career starts and closing in on top-10 status for wins, appearances, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts.  Pavlis, entering his third season with UMBC after transferring from Division II program Alderson-Broaddus College after his freshman season, holds top-10 status in starts and is chasing top-10 marks for appearances while another strong season will have him in the innings pitched and strikeouts top-10 charts as well.
