UMBC BASEBALL DEALT 7-5 LOSS TO LAFAYETTE ON SUNDAY

    Baltimore, Md. - Lafayette (6-11) completed the three-game series sweep of UMBC (8-10) with a 7-5 win over the Retrievers on Sunday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  The Leopards, after UMBC tied the game in the eighth, scored two runs in the top of the ninth for the win. 

     

    UMBC trailed 5-4 heading into the bottom of the eighth inning when Mark Lemon, with two outs, reached on an error.  Lemon stole second base and scored on an RBI single by Ian Carman to tie the game, 5-5. 

     

    Lafayette, however, would regain its lead in the ninth as a lead off walk to James Conrad put the game winning run on first base.  Chris Luick laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Conrad to second base. 

     

    Retriever pitcher Sean Rae struck out pitch hitter Joe Ezekiel before sending Ian Law to first base on an intentional walk.  UMBC looked to be out of the inning on a grounder, but a UMBC error allowed Conrad to score and give the Leopards a 6-5 advantage. 

     

    Mike Raible singled to center field, scoring Law to take the 7-5 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth. 

     

    In the bottom of the ninth, UMBC, with two outs, loaded the bases but Lafayette closer John Fugett, who opened the ninth with two strike outs, finished the game with a strike out on Isaac Friedel for the save.

     

    Steve Roberts earned the win pitching 2.0 innings in relief, allowing one run on one hit.  Matt Kamine started for Lafayette, going 6.0 innings allowing nine hits and four runs.  He struck out six. 

     

    Jon Pavlis started for UMBC, going 7.0 innings and allowing five run on eight hits with three strike outs.  Sean Rae, who took the loss, pitched the final 2.0 innings, allowing two runs, none earned, with three strike outs.  

     

    Ian Law with 3-for-4 with three runs scored for Lafayette.  The Leopards as a team recorded 10 hits in the game.  UMBC was led by Zach Clark going 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI and runs scored.
