Mark Lemon and the Retrievers head to Duke for a two-game series starting on Tuesday.

Baltimore, Md.UMBC will be in action five times this week as the Retrievers travel to Duke for a two-game series on Tuesday and Wednesday and than return home for a three-game weekend series against Lafayette beginning Friday at 5 p.m.

UMBC Travels To Duke, Host Lafayette This Week

UMBC has  full week of action at the Retrievers will travel to play a two-game mid-week series at Duke beginning Tuesday night at 5 p.m. and conclude on Wednesday at 3 p.m.  UMBC opening game against Duke was originally scheduled for 7 p.m. but cold weather in the North Carolina area has forced the game time to be pushed forward.  The Retrievers return home to host Lafayette for three games beginning Friday evening at 5 p.m.  UMBC will host Lafayette at 3 p.m. on Saturday and 2 p.m. on Sunday.  UMBC’s weekend home series is its last home games until April 7 when they open conference play against Maine.

UMBC Splits With Canisius

UMBC split two games with Canisius last week in the Retrievers only action.  Freshman left handed pitcher Eddie Bach earned his first collegiate win going 7.2 innings in UMBC’s 10-8 win over the Golden Griffs.  Bach allowed 11 hits, eight runs while striking out five in the victory.  Tim Comiskey pitched the final out of the eighth inning while Tom Schlein came in the ninth to strike out one and earned the save. 

 

In the Retrievers second game against Canisius, Jon Pavlis was outstanding on the mound, going the complete game to strike out nine while giving up 11 hits and five runs.  Pavlis had the lead in the ninth inning but gave up a two-run home run to Kevin Smith of Canisius as the Golden Griffs rallied for the 5-4 win. 

 

Two of the Retrievers starting outfielders had outstanding weeks as Bran Moran batted .571 with four hits, two doubles, three runs scored and two RBI in seven at bats while teammate Mike Scheffel batted .500 with a 1.100 slugging percentage, recording five hits with three of them doubles and one a home run, driving in three runs and scoring two in 10 at bats.

Junior College Transfers Making An Impact

Junior College transfers Steve Gale and Steve Bowen  are making immediate impacts in the UMBC lineup  Bowen has started all 13 games, 11 at short stop and two at third base.  He is batting .365 on the season with 10 RBI, six doubles and eight runs scored.  He is carrying a .538 slugging percentage and has struck out just four times in 52 at bats.  Gale has started and played in 10 games, all at first base.  Gale is hitting .316 on the season with 12 hits, eight runs scored and eight RBI.  Bowen has hits in 10 of 13 games and seven multi-hit games on the year.  Gale has UMBC’s longest hit streak recorded this season at eight games. 

 

Tom Schlein Named Co-Pitcher of the Week by America East Conference (3-14)

UMBC pitcher Tom Schlein was named America East Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week for the week ending March 12, 2006.  The award recognizes all games played up until March 12 as Schlein in three appearances produced a 1.04 ERA with two wins. 

 

Schlein, a sophomore relief pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with one strikeout in the Retrievers 7-6 win over Navy.  Schlein also entered the game against Manhattan in the fifth inning with two on and UMBC leading 7-5 with one out. Manhattan on a single scored two runs to tie the game, neither of which was credited to Schlein as the lefty was able to get UMBC out of the jam. Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.

 

UMBC Touches The Plate 21 Times Against William & Mary

UMBC crossed home plate 21 times in the middle of a three-game series with William & Mary as the Retrievers defeated the Tribe, 21-7 for their first win of the season.  UMBC tallied 18 hits in the game, led by a 4-for-6 performance by Brian Moran.  UMBC’s 21 runs are the most since scoring 23 runs in a 23-13 win over Quinnipiac on April 29, 2002. 

 

Jancuska Enters Season With Among Nations Top Active Coaches In Wins

UMBC skipper John Jancuska entered the 2006 season with 602 career wins, ranking 45th among active Division I coaches for career wins.  With six wins this season, Jancuska has 608 for his career.

Senior Duo Continues To Climb Into The Retriever Record Books

The Retriever pitching duo of Zach Clark and Jon Pavlis continue to climb closer to top-10 status all-time in the UMBC career pitching record books.  Clark, who has been a Retriever the last four years is fourth all-time in career starts and closing in on top-10 status for wins, appearances, complete games, innings pitched and strikeouts.  Pavlis, entering his third season with UMBC after transferring from Division II program Alderson-Broaddus College after his freshman season, is closest to top-10 status in games started and appearances while another strong season will have him in the innings pitched and strikeouts top-10 charts as well.
