Tom Schlein earned his first conference award last week. |
UMBC pitcher Tom Schlein (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) was named America East Conference Co-Pitcher of the Week. The award recognizes all games played up until March 12 as Schlein in three appearances produced a 1.04 ERA with two wins.
Schlein, a sophomore relief pitcher, pitched 5.0 innings, allowing one earned run and seven hits with one strikeout in the Retrievers 7-6 win over Navy last week. This past weekend Schlein entered the game against Manhattan in the fifth inning with two on and UMBC leading 7-5 with one out. Manhattan on a single scored two runs to tie the game, neither of which was credited to Schlein as the lefty was able to get UMBC out of the jam. Schlein went on to pitch the final two innings, including striking out the number three and four hitters in top of the seventh to earn the win. In the game, Schlein allowed three hits with no runs scored in 2.2 innings while striking out three.
Binghamton’s Pat Haughie (St. James, N.Y./Smithtown) is the week’s America East Player of the Week, while teammate Scott Diamond (Guelph, Ontario/Centennial Univ.) shares the America East Pitcher of the Week honor Schlein. University of Maine’s Kevin McAvoy (Brewer, Maine/Brewer) is this week’s America East Rookie of the Week. The accolades were announced Monday (March 13).
