Jon Pavlis earned the win with five shut out innings on Sunday.

Williamsburg, Va. -  The UMBC baseball team (2-1) defeated William & Mary (3-5) by a final score of 5-0 on Sunday afternoon at Plumeri Park on the campus of William & Mary.  Senior Jon Pavlis and freshman Eddie Bach combined to pitch nine shutout innings, leading the Retrievers to the three-game series win.

UMBC’s pitching was outstanding as Pavlis went the first 5.0 innings, allowing five hits with one walk and striking out four.  Bach matched Pavlis, entering the game to start the sixth as the rookie left hander struck out six and allowed a mere two hits and two walks.  Pavlis earned the win while Bach was credited with the save in the game.

Offensively, UMBC struck early as Brian Moran with one out reached first on a single back to the pitcher.  Moran stole second and scored as Steve Gale singled up the middle.

The Retrievers added to their lead in the top of the fifth as Moran singled to left field with one out.  Moran worked his way around to third on a balk and wild pitch by the Tribe.  Gale, with Moran in scoring position, singled up the middle to drive in Moran for his second RBI of the day.  Gale scored later in the inning as Isaac Friedel recorded an RBI single.

The Retrievers cushioned their lead in the top of the ninth as a walk to Gale with two outs and a double by Zach Clark placed two runners in scoring position for Mark Lemon.  Lemon delivered, singling to right field to drive the duo in as the Retrievers held a 5-0 lead heading into the bottom of the ninth.
