UMBC BASEBALL HEAD COACH JOHN JANCUSKA REACHES CAREER WIN 599 WITH 5-2 VICTORY OVER VERMONT

5/8/2005

Steve Evans earned his first conference win of the season going 6.2 innings on Sunday.

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Joe Fowler's three-run triple paced UMBC to a 5-2 win over Vermont in America East baseball Sunday at Centennial Field.  The win stopped a seven-game conference losing streak for the Retrievers (13-29, 3-12 America East) and was the 599th career win for 28-year UMBC head coach John Jancuska. Vermont falls to 22-13 overall with the loss and 10-5 in America East play.

The Catamounts took an early 2-0 lead taking advantage of four UMBC errors.  With one out in the second, Kyle Brault went from second to third on a wild pitch and came home on a throwing error by catcher Alex Laddbush. A wild throw to second base on a failed pickoff attempt by Laddbush on James Chapman in the third inning led to the second UVM run.

UMBC countered in their next at bat loading the bases with no outs on a hit batter, an error by Chapman and a walk to Kyle Wildasin. Fowler cleared the bases with a long triple over the head of center fielder Kyle Massie and he came home with the fourth run on a sacrifice fly by Laddbush. The Retrievers would add insurance run in the ninth as Wildasin was hit by a pitch, sacrificed to second and scored on a single to center by Laddbush.

The offensive support was more than enough for UMBC starter Steve Evans (2-2) who scattered just six singles and walked one hitter in six and two thirds innings. After giving up three straight two-out singles in the seventh, Zach Clark relieved Evans and retired Raymond Montanez to end the inning. Clark pitched a scoreless eighth and ninth to record his first save.

Other than the fourth, Vermont freshman starter Joe Serafin was also solid going eight and a third innings allowing only three hits, three walks and he had seven strikeouts. In addition to the triple, Serafin (5-2) was hurt by the two hit batters, both coming with a 1-2 count.

Fowler finished 1-for-3 with three RBI and a run scored while Laddbush went 2-for-2 with two RBI and a walk.

UMBC returns to action as they host Towson in Tuesday Night Baseball at 7 p.m. at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
