NORTHEASTERN UTILIZES TWO HOMERUNS TO EARN 5-1 WIN OVER UMBC BASEBALL ON SATURDAY: SUNDAY’S DOUBLEHEADER TO BEGIN AT 11:00 AM

Baltimore, Md. – Behind a grand slam and solo homerun, Northeastern (15-18, 7-3 AE) defeated UMBC (10-25, 2-8 AE) in America East baseball action on Saturday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  The game, which was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader starting at 12 p.m., was changed to a single game that began at 3 p.m.  Sunday’s single contest has been changed to a doubleheader with a seven inning game followed by a nine inning contest beginning at 11:00 a.m.

 

Adam Ottavino allowed one run in the first inning but shut the door after that, holding UMBC to three hits and no runs the remaining 8.0 innings of the game.  UMBC in the first received a single to lead off by Brian Moran, who was pushed to third on a single by Mike Scheffel.  Kyle Wildasin grounded out into a double play, allowing Moran to score the opening run of the game.

 

Ottavino retired 11 batters in a row at one point and stayed out of trouble the majority of the game, allowing three walks and striking out 10 Retriever batters. 

 

UMBC held their 1-0 lead for the first five innings of the game as Eric Butkiewicz held the Huskies to three hits through 5.0 innings.  After two walks and a single loaded the bases in the top of the sixth with no outs, Jeff Heriot launched a shot over the right field fence, clearing the base paths and giving the Huskies a 4-1 lead. 

 

Brian Nutting added a solo shot in the seventh inning to give Northeastern a 5-1 advantage as the Huskies out hit UMBC, 12-5.

 

Butkiewicz took the loss to fall to 3-6 on the year, pitching a complete game and allowing 12 hits, five runs, to walks and striking out two batters.

 

Ottavino captured the win to move to 5-4 on the year.  He finished the complete game allowing one run, three walks, five hits and striking out 10.    

 

The series will conclude on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. with the final two games.
