BOTTOM OF THE NINTH RALLY HANDS TOWSON 6-5 WIN OVER UMBC BASEBALL

    Steve Evans threw 5.0 solid innings for UMBC on Wednesday.

    Towson, Md. – UMBC (10-24) took a 5-4 lead into the ninth inning before back-to-back homeruns by Towson (22-18) to open the ninth inning turned the page and handed the Tigers a 6-5 victory on Wednesday afternoon at Schuerholz Park.  Shane Justis opened the inning with a homerun down the left field line to tie the game 5-5 and Adam Heffron in the Tigers’ next at bat sent a shot down the right field line for the walk-off game winning homerun.

     

    UMBC took the lead in the top first as Mike Scheffel was hit by a pitch and moved to third on a single by Tom Rinaldi.  Kyle Wildasin singled up the middle to drive Scheffel in for a 1-0 Retrievers lead. 

     

    Towson responded with three runs in the bottom of the first with Jason Maxey’s RBI double and Kyle Shellchock single down the right field line, bring two runners in. 

     

    Each team added a run in the fourth inning as Zach Clark extended his hit streak to 13 consecutive games with a homerun, his second of the year for UMBC.  Heffron singled in Justis in the bottom half of the inning to give the Tigers a 4-2 lead.

     

    UMBC took the lead with three runs in the top of the seventh.  Ian Carman scored on a groundout by Scheffel to start the UMBC scoring.  Brian Moran would cross the plate with two outs as Wildasin reached on a throwing error.  Wildasin later scored in the inning on a single by Alex Laddbush putting UMBC in the lead, 5-4.

     

    UMBC held that lead until the back-to-back homeruns in the bottom of the ninth.  Steve Evans started for UMBC going 5.0 innings allowing eight hits, four runs and two strikeouts.  Blake Phipps pitched 3.0 innings allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.  Phipps faced both batters in the ninth inning.

     

    D.J. Reed started for Towson going 5.0 innings allowing two runs on six hits.  Jon Tapper captured the win throwing the top of the ninth inning for Towson.

     

    UMBC returns home to host Northeastern on Saturday at 12 p.m.
