NAVY SPOILS OPENING NIGHT WITH 7-2 WIN OVER UMBC BASEBALL

4/12/2005

  • Box Score

Senior Kyle Wildasin extended his hit streak to 10-games and has a hit in 19 of his last 20 games played.

Baltimore, Md. - The Navy Midshipmen (8-21-1) spoiled UMBC’s Opening Night at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC with a 7-2 victory over the Retrievers (7-16) on Tuesday night.  Navy with the win avenged an earlier season loss to the Retrievers and split the two-game season series with UMBC.  Opening Night marked the first of Tuesday Night Baseball at UMBC as the Retrievers play every Tuesday night at home for the next four weeks.

Navy started their scoring in the third inning with a two-out rally on the Retrievers. After Retriever starter Kyle Wildasin (Hanover, Pa./Southwestern) forced two groundouts, a walk to Ryan McGinn set up a two-run homerun by Jared Munde over the centerfield wall.  Matt Lukevics doubled in Navy’s next at bat.  Lukevics scored on a single by Jonathon-Matthew Johnston.

Navy added three more in the fifth as Johnston tripled to drive in two more runs.  Johnston later scored on a bunt single by Stephen Hobbs.

UMBC was held without a hit threw the first 4.0 innings until Zach Clark (Newark, Del./St. Marks) singled to open the fifth.  In the sixth UMBC scored as Wildasin extended his hit streak to a season-high 10 games with a single to left field, bringing Mike Scheffel (Westminster, Md./Westminster) to the plate.

Steve Russo (Lancaster, Pa./Conestoga Valley) started the eighth with a triple down the right field line.  The Retrievers looked to have started some offense as Anthony Socarras (Miami, Fla./Archbishop Carroll) walked bringing Brian Moran (Columbia, Md./Chapelgate) to the plate with no outs.  Socarras, however, was caught straying to far off first during a lineout to shortstop by Moran as Navy doubled up the Retrievers.

Russo scored in the inning as Scheffel singled to left field.

For the game, James Lee went the first 3.0 innings, pitching a perfect three innings besides an error by the Navy defense allowing one runner on.  Lee captured the win to move to 3-3.  Four other Midshipmen combined for the final six innings of the game.

Johnston led the Navy offense going 3-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Lukevics scored three runs and went 2-for-5 at the plate.

Wildasin took the loss to fall to 0-4 as Wildasin allowed three runs on four hits in 3.0 innings.  Wildasin went 1-for-4 at the plate with a RBI.  Wildasin has a hit in 19 out of his last 20 games.  Scheffel finished 1-for-3 with a run and RBI.

UMBC hosts Georgetown on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. as UMBC hosts “Youth Night”.
