UMBC BASEBALL SLUGS 17 HITS IN 11-2 ROUT OF NAVY ON THURSDAY

    Tom Rinaldi went 4-for-6 with three RBI in UMBC 11-2 win.

    Annapolis, Md. – UMBC Baseball (5-12) tallied 17 hits as they defeated Navy (4-16-1), 11-2 in non-conference baseball action on Thursday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium.  UMBC’s four, five and six hitters (Alex Laddbush, Tom Rinaldi and Steve Russo) went a combined 9-for-18 from the plate with five RBI and six runs scored while Jon Pavlis went 8.0 innings, allowing six hits, two runs and striking out five for his second win of the year.

     

    UMBC scored one run in five of the nine innings played, including blowing open the lead with a five run fifth inning.  UMBC, already ahead 2-0, loaded the bases with singles by Laddbush, Rinaldi and Russo in the fifth inning.  Walks to Mark Lemon, Zach Clark, Joe Fowler and Kyle Wildasin brought in four runs while Ian Carman’s RBI single produced UMBC’s other run of the inning. 

     

    UMBC added two more runs in the eighth and ninth innings.  Laddbush finished 3-for-6 at the plate with three runs scored and an RBI.  Rinaldi went 4-for-6, knocking two doubles and scoring one run with three RBI.  Russo went 2-for-6 with an RBI triple and two runs scored. 

     

    Senior Doug Silverman paced Navy with two hits and a run scored. Classmate Matt Lukevics scored the Midshipmen's other run.  Freshman Spencer Suarez, making his first start of the season, fell to 0-1 after lasting just two innings and allowing two runs.  Navy used six pitchers in the game.

     

    Pavlis, who is coming off a complete game win from last Friday, moves to 2-1 on the year.  Steve Evans pitched the ninth, allowing one hit with no runs scored.  UMBC returns to action at George Mason on Sunday at 2 p.m.
