WILLIAM & MARY TOPS UMBC BASEBALL, 13-5

    Alex Laddbush recorded three RBI with a two-run homerun and an RBI double.

    Williamsburg, Va. - The UMBC Retrievers (3-9) jumped ahead 5-0 after two innings of play but saw William & Mary (14-8) score the final 13 runs of the game to top UMBC, 13-5, in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Plumeri Park.  The game was delayed 1 hour and 10 minutes due to rain but went without stoppage once the game was started.

     

    UMBC in the first inning was led off by a single from Mike Scheffel up the middle.  With two outs and Scheffel on third, Alex Laddbush extended his hit streak to seven consecutive games with a homerun over the left field fence to put UMBC a head 2-0. 

     

    In the bottom of the second inning UMBC added three more runs as Kyle Wildasin hit a sharp chopper to the shortstop with Anthony Socarras on third and Scheffel on second.  An error on the shortstop allowed Wildasin to reach as both Socarras and Scheffel scored.

     

    Laddbush laced a double to right field scoring Wildasin from first base for Laddbush’s third RBI of the day and increase the Retriever advantage to 5-0.

     

    Zach Clark looked solid on the mound going perfect through the first two innings, getting outs on five ground outs and a line out.  In the third Brent McWhorter led off with a homerun but Clark retired the next three batters with a strikeout and two ground outs as UMBC led 5-1.

     

    The Tribe, however, picked up the offense in the fourth and fifth scoring a combined eight runs.  In the fourth the Tribe scored three runs on four singles and a UMBC throwing error. 

     

    In the fifth the Tribe added five runs as Chris Rahl hit a two-run homerun giving the Tribe the lead at 7-5.  Steve Evans replaced Clark on the mound getting the second out of the inning with a strikeout, but a single by Sean Grieve drove in two more runs to top the inning with five runs on five hits and three Retriever errors.

     

    The Tribe added four more runs and Pete Vernon, who entered the game in the second on the mound for William & Mary, retired 14 straight batters at one point leading to the 13-5 win. 

     

    Laddbush finished 2-for-4 with three RBI and a run scored.  Scheffel went 2-for-4 with two runs scored while Wildasin’s nine-game hit streak ended going 0-for-4 with one run scored.  Clark took the loss falling to 0-1 on the year.  Vernon took the win in 5.1 innings pitched.
