UMBC BASEBALL FALLS AT DELAWARE, 5-3

Newark, Del.The UMBC Baseball team (2-7) lost a 5-3 decision to Delaware (7-7) in non-conference baseball action on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Hannah Stadium.  Kyle Wildasin went 2-for-5 on the day, extending his early season hitting streak to seven in a row and eight in the first nine games.

 

Jon Pavlis took the loss, his first of the year as the Retriever right hander went 6.1 innings allowing eight hits, five runs, three earned runs and striking out six.  Blake Phipps finished the seventh inning, allowing one hit before getting out of the inning with a double-play ground out.  Steve Evan threw the bottom of the eighth, sitting down the Blue Hens in order.

 

For Delaware, Billy Harris went the distance, allowing one earned run, three total runs and giving up seven hits.  Harris struck out eight Retriever batters in his complete game performance to move to 1-0 on the year.

 

All score came early on with Delaware taking a 1-0 lead in the first as a double by Brock Donovan scored Brandon Menchaca, who led off the inning with a single.

 

UMBC in the second tallied all three of their runs on the day, taking advantage of four Delaware errors in the inning.  The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Brian Moran, as he singled to the pitcher as Anthony Socarras and Ian Carman scored on the play.  Earlier in the inning Mark Lemon scored as Socarras reached on an error.

 

UMBC’s lead would not hold up as in the bottom of the second inning Bryan Hagerich would connect on a three-run homerun with one out regain the lead for Delaware, 4-3.  The Blue Hens added another run in the fourth as David Harden scored on a throwing error while stealing third base.

 

Moran and Carman each finish 2-for-4 as UMBC recorded seven hits in the game.  Delaware finished with nine hits and seven errors. 

 

UMBC returns to the diamond at Georgetown on Thursday at 3:00 p.m.
