Baltimore, Md. – The Buffalo Bulls (1-7) earned their first win of the year with a 7-6 victory over host UMBC (2-6) at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC on Tuesday afternoon.  Both starting pitchers went the full nine innings in the contest as Adam Ruszkowski (1-1) edged Retriever start Eric Butkiewicz (0-3) for the win.

Ruszkowski gave up 10 hits in the game but allowed a total of six runs, five earned and struck out five.  Butkiewicz struck out eight batters but allowed seven runs, five earned, on eight hits.

Buffalo’s big inning came in the second as James Kingsley led off with a double off the left centerfield fence.  Two batters later Andy Wengert singled to drive in the first run of the game.

With two aboard, Mike Folli singled up the middle with a hard line drive that got past centerfielder Mike Scheffel and went all the way to the fence.  Two runners scored and Retriever third baseman Steve Russo, while Folli was coming into third base, was called for interference, allowing Folli to score on the play and give Buffalo a 4-0 lead.

UMBC in the bottom half of the second inning took advantage of a two-out double by Tom Rinaldi as Russo singled home the Retriever catcher two batters later to put UMBC’s first run on the board.

In the third UMBC struck with three runs on four hits as three-consecutive singles brought Zach Clark to the plate with the bases loaded.  Clark punched a ball down the right field line for a double to score two.  Rinaldi knocked a sacrifice fly to centerfield allowing Alex Laddbush to score from third and tie the game 4-4.

Buffalo responded in the top of the fourth with a solo homerun by Dan Quinn.  Following a homerun by Al Barbato in the seventh inning, Quinn hit his second homerun of the day, the game winner in the top of the eighth.

UMBC scored in the bottom of the seventh and eighth coming within one run of the Bulls on both occasions.  In the seventh Russo, after singling, worked his way around to third base and came home on a ground out by Ian Carman.  In the eighth Clark recorded his third RBI of the game with a single to bring home Laddbush, who doubled one batter earlier.
