Norfolk, Va. – The UMBC Baseball team (0-2) lost a 17-4 decision to Old Dominion (7-5) in game two of the three-game weekend series on Saturday afternoon.  Old Dominion broke the game wide open in the fourth with an 11-run inning, forcing Retriever starter Eric Butkiewicz out of the game and taking a 13-3 advantage at that point.

Butkiewicz lasted 3.0 innings allowing six runs on nine hits, four of those runs earned.  The Retrievers took a 3-2 lead with three runs in the second inning as with two outs and the bases loaded Anthony Socarras laced a double into centerfield, clearing the base paths for three RBI.  Mark Lemon, Tom Rinaldi and Carl Wolf all scored on the hit.

The game started to unravel for UMBC in the bottom of the fourth as the first seven batters reached base on UMBC.  Behind four doubles and a triple the Monarchs scored 11 runs and took a 13-3 lead.

UMBC added one more run in the seventh as Mike Scheffel singled in Lemon.

Bo Sauter replaced Butkiewicz going 3.0 innings allowing seven runs, four earned, on five hits.  Dan Blewitt and Tom Schlein each tossed an inning as well.  Seven Retrievers tallied a hit on the day with Socarras’ three RBI double the biggest one.
