UMBC BASEBALL FALLS IN SEASON OPENER, 5-1, TO OLD DOMINION

Chris Cerullo went 3-for-3 at the plate for UMBC on Friday.

Norfolk, Va. – The UMBC Baseball team (0-1) dropped a 5-1 decision to Old Dominion (6-5) on Friday afternoon in UMBC’s season opening game.  The Monarchs scored four runs in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie and capture the win.

 

Kyle Wildasin shined on the mound for UMBC going the first 5.0 innings allowing one run on six hits with a strikeout.  ODU’s one run came in the in the fourth as Justin Gregula singled home Bryan Cipolla.

 

The Retrievers tied the game in the eighth with runners on first and third. Ian Carman singled up the middle, scoring Mark Lemon.

 

Steve Evans took over the mound for UMBC in the sixth inning holding the Monarchs scoreless the first two innings before ODU tallied four runs in the bottom of the eighth.

 

In the bottom of the eighth, ODU’s Steve Harris led off with a double. With one out, Cipolla was intentionally walked and Tyler Belcher also walked. Gregula then singled, Scoring Cipolla and Harris. C.J. Jacinto followed with a single which plated Belcher. Keith Hahn completed the four-run by singling home Gregula.

 

Chris Cerrullo went a perfect 3-for-3 from the plate for UMBC while Zach Clark, Carman, Kyle Wildason, Lemon and Carl Wolf each had one hit. 

 

Belcher led ODU with three hits on the day and James Burok picked up his second win of the year. Starter Bryan Hansen held UMBC scoreless for 7.2 innings, striking out seven with no walks allowed.

 

UMBC and ODU play game two of the series Saturday at 1 p.m.
