UMBC BASEBALL SPLITS WITH STONY BROOK

Stony Brook, N.Y. - UMBC moved to 13-34 overall and 5-12 in the America East as they defeated Stony Brook in game one of a doubleheader by a score of 7-6, and dropped game two to the Seawolves, 8-1.
The Seawolves built a picket fence to start Game 2, scoring single runs in the first three innings to answer UMBC's run in the top of the first. Nick Theoharis got the Seawolves on the board with an RBI single in the first before Jon Pasieka put SB on top with an RBI groundout to score Dave Mischo in the second inning. Matt Devins doubled in bottom of the third, advanced to third base on a wild pitch and later scored on an sacfrice fly by Isidro Fortuna to give the Seawolves a 3-1 advantage at the end of three.
Stephen Didsbury upped the Seawolves lead to 5-1 with a two run homer deep over the wall in left-center in the fifth inning and Andrew Larsen put the game out of reach with a two-run blast in the sixth. Devins followed Larsen's roundtripper with his third double of the game and was plated on an RBI single by Fortuna to give the Seawolvestheir final run and an 8-1 victory.
Stony Brook's Jon Lewis tossed his third straight complete game without allowing a walk to improve to 5-6 this season. He allowed one run while scattering 10 hits and striking out five and has now thrown 24.1 consecutive innings without surrendering a base onballs.
Zach Clark led UMBC at the plate in the nightcap, going 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Jon Pavlis (2-9) took the loss on the mound.
Fortuna's second home run of the game capped a four-run comeback and tied the score 6-6 in the bottom of the seventh inning of Game 1, but Dan Carpenter put the Retrievers up a run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly and it proved to be the difference as UMBC held on for the 7-6 victory.
The Seawolves strung together three consecutive hits to jump on top 2-0 in the bottom of the first as Devins cracked a solo home run, Fortuna doubled and was plated on a RBI single up the middle by Will Brumfield.
UMBC answered back with four runs in the top of the second inning, tying the score at two on an two-run double by Matt Buchholz and taking the lead on RBI singles by Carpenter and Mike Scheffel. The Retrievers tacked on a pair of runs in the third on four singles and a wild pitch that scored Jon Gossard to make the score 6-2.
Stony Brook chipped away at the Retrievers lead with the long ball as Fortuna hit a solo shot in the bottom of the third and Nick Theoharis added an opposite field solo blast to pull within 6-4, before Fortuna tied the ballgame at six in the seventh.
Paul Carufe (2-3) suffered the loss, throwing 5.0 innings and allowing one run on one hit and two walks. Fortuna led the way offensively in the opener, going 4-for-4 with three RBI and three runs
scored.
Bo Sauter (4-2) earned the win for UMBC, striking out three and allowing just one run in three innings of work out of the bullpen. Kyle Wildasin went 2-for-4 with a run scored while Carpenter drove in two runs in the opener for the Retrievers.
The Seawolves and Retrievers will be back in action tomorrow at noon in the rubber match of their three-game series.
