RETRIEVERS FALL IN NINTH TO VERMONT ON SUNDAY, 7-4

5/9/2004

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (12-32, 4-11 AE) lost to the Vermont Catamounts (13-24, 6-9 AE) in America East Conference baseball action on Sunday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.  The Catamounts added three runs in the top of the ninth to break a 4-4 tie en route to the series finale win as they took the series two game to one with the 7-4 win on Sunday.

UMBC took the lead after a scoreless first four innings as Bryan Owens knocked an RBI double down the left field line to bring Kevin Brooks around from first base.

The Retrievers saw their one-run advantage quickly dissipate as two Retriever errors and three Catamount hits resulted in a four-run sixth for Vermont.

UMBC scored three in the bottom of the seventh with Owens and Chris Cerullo hitting back-to-back singles with one out.  A passed ball allowed each to move up a base before an error on the Catamounts allowed Jack Saffron to reach base and bring Owens to the plate.

Dan Carpenter laced a double into deep centerfield to bring Cerullo and Saffron to the plate and cap the Retrievers scoring.

Jon Pavlis started for the Retrievers going 8.2 innings before being relieved by Blake Phipps with two away in the ninth.  Pavlis allowed seven runs on 11 hits and struck out seven batters.  Only two of the seven runs scored were earned.

Justin Bissonnette started for Vermont going 6.1 innings allowing four runs on seven hits.  Mike Smith threw 1.2 innings of scoreless ball before giving way to Brandon Miles in the ninth.  Miles picked up the save.

Dan Carpenter and Bryan Owens each finished the game with three hits as Carpenter knocked two RBI and Owens had an RBI and run scored.

Miguel Magrass led the Catamounts with a 3-for-4 day with two runs scored and two RBI.
