NAVY AVENGES LAST WEEK’S NINTH INNING LOSS WITH 6-2 WIN ON WEDNESDAY OVER RETRIEVER BASEBALL

4/28/2004

Annapolis, Md. -  The Navy Midshipmen (14-35) defeated the UMBC (10-25, 3-6 AE) baseball team on Wednesday afternoon at Max Bishop Stadium by a final score of 6-2 in non-conference baseball action.  The Midshipmen avenged a loss the previous week in which the Retrievers tallied three ninth-inning runs to come from behind in their last at bat and beat the Naval Academy.

The Retrievers did all their scoring in the third inning as Zach Clark and Kyle Wildasin led off the inning with back-to-back singles and each moved ahead on a throwing error to put runners at first and second.  After a walk to Mike Orlando, Jon Gossard and Chris Cerrullo each recorded RBI’s, plating Clark and Wildasin respectively.

Wildasin recorded the only multi-hit game for the Retrievers, going 2-for-4 in the game and extended his hit streak to 12 consecutive games and now has a hit in 23 of his last 24 games played.

The Midshipmen tallied four runs in the first as Retriever started Steve Evans allowed three hits and walked three batters.  Evans settled down after the first for the next couple of innings but allowed two more runs in the fifth before his day was done.  Evans, who took the loss, went 5.0 innings allowing six runs on seven hits and striking out five.

Matt Buchholz and Wildasin finished the final three innings allowing no hits and no runs.

Matt Lukavics led the way for Navy with a 2-for-3 day at the plate with three RBI and a run scored.  Daniel Kovalcik went 5.0 allowing two runs on three hits to get the win and move to 2-4 on the year.

The Retrievers return to action on Thursday night with a 7:00 p.m. contest at home when they host George Washington.
