RETRIEVERS AND GREAT DANES SPLIT AE BASEBALL DOUBLEHEADER

Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (6-19, 1-1 AE) split a doubleheader with the Albany Great Danes (17-4, 1-1 AE) in America East baseball action on Friday afternoon at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. Albany snagged game one with a 12-5 win while the Retrievers claimed game two with a final decision of 9-3.
Game two Zach Clark went all 7.0 innings for his third consecutive win as he moves to 3-3 on the season. Clark allowed three runs on nine hits and struck out three batters as well.
The Retrievers tallied runs in the first, second, fourth and sixth innings en route to the win. Leading the way was Dan Carpenter, who went 2-for-4 with two doubles to drive in three runs and Kevin Brooks with a 3-for-4 day, recording two RBI and two runs scored. Kyle Wildasin went 1-for-2 with his sixth homerun of the season as he drove in two runs.
Kyle Thomas started game two for Albany, throwing 3.2 innings and allowing eight runs on four hits. Leading the way offensively was Dan Schoonmaker with his second homerun of the day. Schoonmaker went 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs scored.
In game one the Retrievers came up on the short end of long ball contest as six different Great Dane batters went yard. The Great Danes got their offense started in the second with back-to-back homeruns by Kirt Zimniewicz and Brendan Chiavaro. In the third Great Danes went deep on back-to-back batters as well as Tony Vallone and Schoonmaker each hit homeruns. Albany scored at least one run in seven of nine innings including the final five.
Trailing 5-0 heading into the fourth inning Zach Clark responded for the Retrievers taking a shot over the centerfield wall for his second homerun of the season. Kyle Wildasin, after singling following Clark’s homerun, later scored in the inning.
Dan Carpenter supplied the Retrievers final run of the game dialing long distance with his second homerun of the year in the bottom of the ninth. Carpenter went 2-for-5 on the day with a RBI and run scored. Jack Saffron went 3-for-3 and Clark was 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.
Nick Murphy threw a stellar game one for the Great Danes, striking out six Retrievers in the complete game effort. Murphy allowed 10 hits and five runs.
Eric Butkiewicz started for the Retrievers throwing 7.0 innings allowing nine runs on nine hits. Butkiewicz recorded nine strikeouts.
The Retrievers and Great Danes conclude their series on Saturday, April 10 at 2 p.m. at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
