TERPS SQUEAK BY RETRIEVERS WITH 2-0 WIN

4/7/2004

Aberdeen, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (5-18, 0-0 AE) fell to the Maryland Terrapins (16-15, 2-7 ACC) by a final score of 2-0 in baseball action on Wednesday night at Ripken Stadium.  Kevin Hart for the Terps provided the only scoring in the game with solo homeruns in the fifth and seventh innings.

The Retrievers’ offense was held silent by Terp starter Ben Pfinsgraff, who went all nine innings to get the shutout as the Retrievers only managed to scatter three hits in the game.  The Retriever hits came from Kevin Brooks, Mike Orlando and Jack Saffron.

Steve Evans started on the mound for the Retrievers throwing five solid innings allowing one run on two hits.  That run came in the fifth inning as Hart went the opposite way, putting a shot over the right field wall to open the inning.  Evans responded nicely after allowing the solo homerun, sitting down the next three Terrapin hitters.

Tom Ballenger took over for Evans in the sixth, allowing one run and two hits over the two innings as the Terps’ only run in that span came at the hands of Hart again, who in the seventh sent a pitch over the left field wall for his sixth of the year.

Mike Johnson pitched the eighth allowing one hit and no runs.

Evans took the loss his first of the year while Pfinsgraff moves to 3-1 on the year.

The Retrievers return to action when they host Albany in a doubleheader on Friday at 2 p.m.
