Baltimore, Md. – The America East Conference announced today that UMBC baseball junior Mike Orlando (Rochester, N.Y./W. Irondequoit) has been named America East Player of the Week for the week ending April 4, 2004. Orlando in two games batted .625 with five RBI and two runs scored on the week.
In the week opener against Towson, Orlando went 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI. That RBI came in the third inning as he drove teammate Kevin Brooks across the plate with a single.
The next day against BIG East foe Georgetown, Orlando continued to swing the hot bat, belting his first homerun of the year in the seventh inning. Orlando’s shot was a two-run homerun that gave the Retrievers a couple of insurance runs after the Hoyas rallied from a 7-2 deficit in the top of the seventh to close the Retrievers’ lead to 7-6. UMBC held on to win the game 10-7 behind Orlando’s 2-for-4 day from the plate with three RBI and two runs scored.
The junior outfielder went 5-for-8 on the week and is batting .277 on the season. Orlando has recorded six multi-hit games on the year and has a hit in seven of his past nine games, batting .368 over that span.
The Retrievers have a full slate of games on tap this week, traveling to play George Mason and Maryland in midweek match-ups on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively and hosting their first America East Conference game with Albany on Friday at 2 p.m. The game against Albany will mark the start of a nine-game, seven-date home stand at The Baseball Factory Field at UMBC.
