RETRIEVERS RALLY FOR 6-4 WIN OVER BUFFALO IN BASEBALL ACTION ON SUNDAY AFTERNOON
Jon Pavlis earned his first win of the year going 5.0 innings allowing three hits and one run while striking out three.
Baltimore, Md. – The UMBC Retrievers (3-15) came from behind to defeat the University of Buffalo (3-13), 6-4, in baseball action on Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The Retriever trailed 4-0 heading into the bottom of the fifth only to score six runs in the next three at bats and take a 6-4 lead that would hold up as Jon Pavlis in relieve shut down the Bulls offense and took his first win of the year.
In the bottom of the fifth inning and down by four, the Retrievers loaded the bases with no outs as Jack Saffron singled to center field, Chris Cerullo walked and Mike Orlando laid down a beautiful bunt down the third base line to juice the bases. Kevin Brooks in the Retrievers next at bat reached on a fielder’s choice, scoring Saffron. Zach Clark then grounded out allowing Cerullo to cross the plate. Kyle Wildasin, who recorded five RBI the previous game against Buffalo, singled to left field to bring Brooks around and pull UMBC within one at 4-3.
In the bottom of the sixth Saffron led things off for the Retrievers again, walking to put a runner aboard for UMBC. Cerullo followed Saffron by reaching on a fielder’s choice. Orlando put down a sacrifice bunt to move the runners along and Saffron came across the plate on a balk by pitcher Adam Ruszkowski. Brooks loaded the bases again with a walk to bring to the plate Clark, who leads the team in batting average. Clark hit an RBI single into left field as Cerullo scored the eventual game-winning run.
The Retrievers added an insurance run in the seven inning as Chris Becraft doubled off the center field wall and scored on a Cerullo single.
Jon Pavlis entered in the fifth inning, allowing three hits, one run and striking out three in 5.0 innings of work.
Buffalo’s scoring came in the second and fifth inning. The Bulls received RBI singles by Aaron Otto and Brian Zelasko and Andrew Wengert scored on a throwing error by Retriever starter Blake Phipps to put the Bulls ahead 3-0 after two. In the fifth Joe Mihalics singled to right field, driving in Al Barbato to score the Bulls’ fourth run of the game.
Sean McWilliams started going 5.0 innings with seven hits and three runs allowed. Adam Ruszkowski got the loss and Joe Welch pitched the final 2.2 innings allowing one run on three hits.
Leading the way offensively for UMBC was Saffron and Cerullo, both going 2-for-3 from the plate and scoring two runs each. Leading the way for Buffalo was Mihalics with a 2-for-4 day at the plate and an RBI.
