BUTKIEWICZ FANS EIGHT BATTERS IN EIGHT INNINGS TO LEAD UMBC PAST FAIRFIELD, 6-1
Eric Butkiewicz struck out eight batters to lead UMBC to a 6-1 win.
UMBC junior Eric Butkiewicz struck out eight batters and gave up a mere three hits in 8.0 innings to get his first win of the year and lead UMBC past Fairfield, 6-1, on Sunday afternoon at the Baseball Factory Field at UMBC. The Retrievers move to 2-8 on the year, sweeping the two-game series with the Stags, as Fairfield falls to 0-2.
The Retriever bats got going in the second inning as Mike Orlando singled to drive in Zach Clark and later scored on a throwing error.
The Stags plated their only run of the game in the fourth inning as Antuan Barnett tripled to score teammate Doug Anderson.
The Retrievers held a 2-1 lead up until the sixth when UMBC scored two runs on four hits as three consecutive singles loaded the bases. Dan Carpenter drove in one run followed by a Chris Cerullo single that plated Mike Scheffel to give UMBC a cushion.
Chris Cerullo went 3-for-4 from the plate with an RBI on the day and Mike Orlando scored three runs, driving in one on a 3-for-4 day as well from the plate. Butkiewicz allowed one run on three hits, striking out eight in 8.0 innings.
Fairfield starter Pablo Tamayo went 6.0 innings striking out three and allowing four runs on 10 hits.
The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, Mar. 9 as they play at George Washington University at 2:30 p.m.
