RETRIEVERS' BASEBALL ANNOUNCES CAPTAINS FOR 2004

11/25/2003

Dan Carpenter along with Chris Becraft have been selected as captains for the 2004 season.

Head UMBC Baseball Coach John Jancuska announced the team’s captains for the 2004 season.  Seniors Chris Becraft (Clarksville, Md./River Hill) and Dan Carpenter (Millersville, Md./Old Mill) have been selected to co-captain the Retrievers as they head into their first year in the America East.

“The coaching staff is very pleased with the selection of Chris and Dan as co-captains for the 2004 season,” said coach Jancuska.  “Chris and Dan have been major contributors to the program since their freshman year when they helped lead UMBC to the 2001 NCAA Regional Tournament and will give us the necessary leadership on and off the field as new members of the America East Conference.”

Becraft started in 29 of 33 games played last season, hitting .258 with 11 RBI.  The designated hitter/outfield led the team in sacrifice flies.  Carpenter started all 44 games as shortstop for the Retrievers, hitting .243 with 22 RBI.  Carpenter had eight doubles and went yard twice while recording 80 put outs.

The Retrievers open their season at Tulane on February 20, 2004.
