2006:  Started 41 of 46 games for the Retrievers, 35 in right field and six in center… Held the fourth-highest batting average on the team with a .295… Had 49 hits, 26 runs scored, and 23 RBI’s… 14 doubles was the team’s second-highest… Also added one triple and two home runs… Committed one error and held a .988 fielding percentage… Best performance came against Canisius where he was 4-for-5 with two runs scored, three RBI’s, two doubles, and a home run… Played in all but one conference game, batting .293 and recording 22 hits, nine runs scored, seven RBI’s, and six extra-base hits.

 

2005:  Became an everyday player, starting in 43 games and playing in 47 out of a possible 50 on the year… Found his niche in right field, starting 40 games there… Hit .280 on the season with 46 hits, five doubles, two triples, two homeruns and 18 RBI… Scored 30 runs on the year, tying for second on the team… Batted 11 games in the first slot and 28 games in the second slot in the batting order… Average ended at .305 in conference play with 25 hits and three doubles… One of three players to start all 21 conference games… Both home runs on the year came in the same game, leading UMBC to a 9-7 win over Maryland… Hit his second home run in the top of the ninth with a two-run shot to break a 7-7 tie… Went 2-for-5 in the game to spark a season-high seven-game hit streak… Went 4-for-4 against Stony Brook with three runs scored, 4-for-6 at Maine with three runs scored and 4-for-5 against Northeastern to lead UMBC with three four-hit games… Finished with 11 multi-hit games on the year.

 

2004:  Played in 47 games as a freshman, starting in 41… Batted .213 on the year with 14 runs scored and 10 RBI… Made 63 putouts with just three errors on the season… Eight of his 10 RBI came in the final 14 games of the season… Recorded two three-hit performances, going 3-of-5 from the plate against William & Mary with two runs scored and 3-for-5 with one run scored and three RBI against Stony Brook… Finished with 30 hits, two doubles and three home runs.

 

Scheffel's Background:  A three-sport athlete at Westminster High School, competing in golf and indoor track as well as baseball… Earned First-Team All-Carroll County honors in 2002 and 2003 by the Baltimore Sun and Carroll County Times… Hit .377 from the plate in 2002 and carried a .508 batting average his senior year in 2003… Earned Central Maryland Academic All-Conference honors in 2003 and Scholar Athlete accolades both his junior and senior seasons… Earned First-Team All-Carroll County by the Baltimore Sun and Carroll County Times in 2002 for indoor track after placing second in the region and fifth in the states in the pole vault… Majoring in geography... One of three children to Bart and Susan Scheffell… Was born July 6, 1985.
